Assessing Copper-Alternative Products for the Control of Pre- and Postharvest Citrus Anthracnose

Monia Federica Lombardo et al.

Summary: Citrus production is threatened by Colletotrichum spp. causing anthracnose before and after harvest. The limitation on the use of copper-based antimicrobials makes control difficult. Alternative products including mineral fertilizers, essential oils, and biological control agents showed potential in inhibiting mycelial growth and reducing disease incidence in vitro and in field trials. Among them, Biorend, a chitosan-based product, showed the best efficacy in reducing disease incidence in naturally infected citrus fruits.

Efficacy of Biological Control Agents and Resistance Inducer for Control of Mal Secco Disease

Giuseppa Rosaria Leonardi et al.

Summary: Mal secco, caused by Plenodomus tracheiphilus, is an economically important fungal vascular disease in citrus-growing countries of the Mediterranean basin. In our study, biological control agents (BCAs) and a plant resistance inducer (PRI) have shown promising strategies to control mal secco disease. Two formulations of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Trichoderma spp. demonstrated effective reduction in disease incidence and symptoms severity.

Distribution and characterization of Colletotrichum species associated with Citrus anthracnose in eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey

Aysun Uysal et al.

Summary: This study identified and characterized Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and C. karsti associated with citrus anthracnose in Turkey. The researchers conducted surveys in the citrus production area of the Eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey and obtained a total of 194 Colletotrichum strains from different citrus cultivars and plant tissues. Pathogenicity trials showed that both species were able to colonise different parts of citrus plants and cause symptoms similar to those observed in the field. This is the most comprehensive study on the identification and characterization of these fungi in Turkey.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens as an excellent agent for biofertilizer and biocontrol in agriculture: An overview for its mechanisms

Lin Luo et al.

Summary: This review discusses the plant growth promotion (PGP) mechanisms of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (BA) and its current limitations in agriculture. BA can improve soil nutrient availability, change soil microbial community, secrete hormones and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and enhance plant resistance against biotic and abiotic stresses. Future studies should focus on the nutrient uptake mechanisms of plants in different soil conditions.

Antifungal effects of low environmental risk compounds on development of pear postharvest diseases: Orchard and postharvest applications

Maria Cecilia Lutz et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the antimicrobial effect of different low-toxicity compounds on the control of postharvest diseases in pears caused by Botrytis cinerea, Alternaria alternata, and Alternaria spp. The results showed that some of these compounds had good control efficacy against different pathogens under different application methods and also had an impact on fruit quality. These compounds may serve as useful alternatives to traditional chemical fungicides in postharvest practices.

Toxicity and Preventive Activity of Chitosan, Equisetum arvense, Lecithin and Salix Cortex against Plasmopara viticola, the Causal Agent of Downy Mildew in Grapevine

Diego Llamazares De Miguel et al.

Summary: Grapevine is annually affected by diseases, such as downy mildew caused by Plasmopara viticola, which can lead to economic losses. Conventional chemical fungicides and copper-based formulations used to combat these diseases have environmental consequences. Therefore, alternative plant protection products (PPP) containing basic substances like chitosan, Equisetum arvense, lecithins, and Salix cortex can be promoted as more sustainable treatments for grapevine diseases.

Plant based natural products as potential ecofriendly and safer biopesticides: A comprehensive overview of their advantages over conventional pesticides, limitations and regulatory aspects

Aadil Khursheed et al.

Summary: Synthetic pesticides are toxic to humans, animals, non-target plants, and the environment, leading to an increased interest in biopesticides derived from natural sources. Plant-based biopesticides have complex chemical compositions that make it difficult for pests to develop resistance. They have various anti-insecticidal mechanisms and can inhibit oviposition and decrease adult emergence. However, limitations such as cost, production difficulties, and lack of appropriate formulations restrict their widespread use.

Sustainable Management of Diseases in Horticulture: Conventional and New Options

Marco Scortichini

Summary: Efforts are being made to reduce the environmental impact of chemical pesticides by exploring environmentally friendly biocontrol agents and natural products for plant disease control. The European Union, FAO, and the United Nations support projects and programs that promote sustainable agriculture and crop protection principles. Preventive measures, such as cultivar selection, soil fertility management, integrated pest management, and organic farming, are essential for achieving satisfactory crop yields and reducing pesticide use. The detection of pathogens at borders is crucial to minimize the risk of future epidemics. New technologies, including forecasting models, precision farming, nanotechnology, and endotherapy, provide technical support for sustainable pathogen control.

Biological Control of Plant Diseases: An Evolutionary and Eco-Economic Consideration

Dun-Chun He et al.

Summary: Biological control is a promising alternative to pesticides and plant resistance for managing plant diseases, but a better understanding of its natural and societal functions is needed for endorsement. The introduction of biological control agents alters interactions among plants, pathogens, and environments, leading to cascading effects that influence pathogen fitness, plant health, and ecological function. Evaluating the benefits and costs of biological control from social and farmer perspectives is crucial for sustainable development and deployment, and a shift in disease control philosophy is necessary to consider multiple aspects such as crop productivity, ecological function, social acceptability, and economic accessibility.
