Integrated culture and harvest systems for improved microalgal biomass production and wastewater treatment

Kai-Xuan Huang et al.

Summary: Cultivating microalgae in wastewater is an environmentally sustainable approach, but commercial application is challenging due to low biomass output and high harvesting costs. Integrated culture and harvest systems, such as microalgae biofilm and membrane photobioreactor, have been explored to efficiently couple microalgal biomass production with wastewater purification. These systems allow for higher microalgae concentration and more efficient harvesting, improving biomass production and wastewater treatment efficiency.

Quantified trend of photosynthetic rate along the depth of microalgae biofilm

Lin -Lan Zhuang et al.

Summary: Compared to suspended microalgae cultivation, attached microalgae cultivation for wastewater treatment has the advantages of low biomass recovery costs and high robustness. A quantified model was built to study the photosynthetic capacity of attached microalgae biofilm along its depth using dissolved oxygen microelectrode. The results showed that the photosynthetic rate decreased gradually with depth, but at a slower rate compared to the suspended system. In addition, the photosynthetic rate of attached microalgae biofilm had a high potential for growth with increasing light intensity.

Microalgal biofilms: Towards a sustainable biomass production

Houda Ennaceri et al.

Summary: Microalgae are a promising source of sustainable biofuels, but their current growth method is not economically viable. Biofilm-based growth systems offer advantages of higher biomass content and lower capital costs, which can help make microalgal fuels economically viable. However, there is limited research on using biofilm-based growth for mass production of microalgal biofuels.

Recognition of key factors on attached microalgae growth from the internal sight of biofilm

Yanan Yang et al.

Summary: Microalgae cultivation with wastewater can achieve advanced water treatment and convert pollutants into biomass. The distribution of light and nutrients in the internal biofilm plays a crucial role in regulating the growth of attached microalgae. Light, rather than nutrients, is found to be the key influencing factor on attached microalgae growth.

A growth-boosting synergistic mechanism of Chromochloris zofingiensis under mixotrophy

Yaqing Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the beneficial effects of mixotrophy on cellular growth by studying Chromochloris zofingiensis. The results showed that mixotrophy significantly increased biomass production compared to photoautotrophic and heterotrophic cultivation. Chlorophyll fluorescence and transcriptomics analysis revealed that the higher biomass production under mixotrophy was attributed to improved photosynthesis performance, decreased light damage and photorespiration, and upregulated glucose metabolism compared to photoautotrophy. Furthermore, mixotrophy consumed less glucose with lower metabolic efficiency but led to higher biomass yield compared to heterotrophy. This study proposes a synergistic growth-promoting mechanism between photosynthesis and glucose metabolism under mixotrophy, which contributes to higher energy usage efficiency and biomass yield, providing insights for selecting growth strategies for commercially valuable algal species.

Transcriptomic analysis unravels the modulating mechanisms of the biomass and value-added bioproducts accumulation by light spectrum in Eustigmatos cf. Polyphem (Eustigmatophyceae)

Hu Zhang et al.

Summary: Light spectrum plays a significant role in influencing the growth and metabolic accumulation of Eustigmatos cf. polyphem microalgae. Red light promotes biomass, total lipid, and palmitoleic acid content, while blue light is favorable for the accumulation of 8-carotene.

Physiology of microalgal biofilm: a review on prediction of adhesion on substrates

Yi Tong Cheah et al.

Summary: Microalgal-biofilm-based cultivation system is advocated as a sustainable and resource-friendly solution for microalgal biomass production. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) form a network connecting cells and substrates, but their interactions within biofilm are poorly understood. Immobilized microalgae can be achieved through balancing interactions among three interfaces, offering a promising approach for sustainable production.

Cultivation of microalgae in palm oil mill effluent (POME) for astaxanthin production and simultaneous phycoremediation

John Senith Ravishan Fernando et al.

Summary: Haematococcus pluvialis exhibited better adaptability to higher concentrations of palm oil mill effluent (POME), leading to higher astaxanthin yield and reduced freshwater consumption for astaxanthin production. However, only moderate performance in phycoremediation was achieved. The study showed that POME from Sri Lankan palm oil mills has the potential to be utilized for large-scale production of microalgal astaxanthin.
