Strategies to develop ?-aminoketone derivatives photoinitiators with low migration ability for UV-vis LED photopolymerization

Wen Liao et al.

Summary: In this study, a polymerizable vinyl sulfide modified 907 derivative and four macromolecular photoinitiators based on it were designed and synthesized to achieve low migration and high photoactivity. The structures of these photoinitiators were confirmed by various analyses. The macromolecular strategies successfully improved the photoactivity of the photoinitiators compared to the base derivative. Moreover, the prepared photoinitiators demonstrated better performance in terms of radical generation and migration stability, making them suitable for applications in food packaging and biological materials.

High-performance photoinitiating systems for new generation dental fillings

Monika Topa-Skwarczynska et al.

Summary: This article aims to develop new generation dental composites that have improved performance compared to current dental fillings on the market, and to investigate the impact of new initiating systems on parameters such as degree of cure, hardness, color, and shrinkage. The effectiveness of the developed initiating systems was verified through spectroscopic, electrochemical, and kinetic studies using the real-time FT-IR method. The experiments demonstrated that the composite containing 3-SCH3Ph-Q, IOD, MDEA, nanometric silica, and a bonding agent achieved a cure rate of over 90% after just 1 cycle of dental lamp exposure (30 s), a hardness of 82 & PLUSMN; 4 on the Shore Scale after curing, and a polymerization shrinkage of less than 2.8%.

Occurrence, Fate, Human Exposure, and Toxicity of Commercial Photoinitiators

Xiaomeng Ji et al.

Summary: Photoinitiators (PIs) are anthropogenic chemicals used in polymerization systems to initiate polymerization reactions. Their wide application in commercial products has led to environmental issues. This study reviews the occurrence, human exposure, and toxicity of PIs and suggests future research directions. PIs have been found in commercial products, water, sediment, sewage sludge, indoor dust, serum, and breast milk. Benzophenone is the most detected congener. PIs have toxic effects, such as carcinogenicity and endocrine disruption. Future research should focus on coexposure effects, metabolism/transformation pathways, and the development of greener PIs.
