Relationship between olefins and coking propensity of heavy residual oil derived from vacuum residue thermal cracking products

Feng Wang et al.

Summary: This study systematically characterized the structure of heavy residual oil (RO) derived from vacuum residue (VR) thermal cracking, and investigated the occurrence pattern of olefins. The results showed that the occurrence of olefins during thermal cracking significantly contributed to a greater coking propensity of RO in further deep processing. The olefinic-bond-containing aromatics in the asphaltenes were found to confer the greatest contribution to the increasing coking propensity of RO.

CO2-H2O assisted co-pyrolysis of petroleum vacuum residue and polypropylene to improve asphaltene reduction and coke suppression: A statistical approach

Shabnam Gharibi et al.

Summary: In this study, non-catalytic co-pyrolysis of petroleum vacuum residue (VR) and polypropylene (PP) was conducted in a batch condition under CO2 and/or steam atmospheres. Statistical analysis showed that CO2 + steam environment was more effective in reducing asphaltene formation and suppressing coke formation. The addition of PP improved the yield and quality of the liquid product and reduced the coke content. Optimum conditions for the pyrolysis reaction were determined, resulting in high maltene yield, reduction of asphaltene and coke, and improved quality of the upgraded oil. The pyrolysis of VR with PP in the CO2 + steam environment was considered an economically viable and environmentally friendly technique for transforming low-grade VR feedstocks to valuable liquid fuels without using catalysts.

Highly active and stable CoWS2 catalysts in slurry phase hydrocracking of vacuum residue: XAFS studies

Donghun Lee et al.

Summary: Bimetallic CoWS2 catalysts were synthesized during slurry phase hydrocracking (HCK) of vacuum residue (VR) using W(CO)6 and Co-octoate as oil-soluble precursors. The dispersed catalysts were characterized by TEM and XAS, showing that the CoWS2 catalyst formed well-dispersed monolayers. This catalyst exhibited higher TOF and C7-ASP conversions compared to monometallic WS2 or Co9S8 catalysts in the VR HCK.

Naseer Ahmad Khan et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility of using solar energy in an oil refinery to reduce fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. With the help of ASPEN HYSYS model and TRNSYS software, a Parabolic Trough Collector (PTC)-based solar heating system coupled with a thermal energy storage (TES) system is proposed. The results show that this hybrid heating system can achieve significant cost savings, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and provide a steady heat supply.

Impact of co-feeding cracked light products on visbreaking of vacuum residue deasphalted oil

Joy H. Tannous et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of co-feeding light cracked products on thermal conversion, focusing on n-pentane insoluble asphaltenes content and formation. It was found that adding distilled cracked naphtha and kerosene did not significantly alter the thermal reaction progression or reduce the development of n-pentane insoluble material in the products. Control experiments showed that some of the naphthalene was directly thermally alkylated, leading to the formation of n-pentane insoluble material.

Comparative analysis of the effects of hydrogen and formic acid on the vacuum residue hydrocracking

Vladimir V. Chesnokov et al.

Summary: Improvement and development of technologies for processing heavy oils and oil residues is crucial in modern oil refining. This study investigated the decomposition pathway of formic acid and compared its effects with hydrogen on vacuum residue hydrocracking using Ni-Mo/Y-Al2O3 and Ni-Mo/Al2O3 catalysts. The results showed that formic acid led to higher conversion of the residue and lower sulfur content in the liquid products compared to hydrogen. The use of formic acid as a hydrogen donor simplified the hydrocracking process significantly.

Catalytic hydrocracking of vacuum residue in a semi-batch reactor: Effect of catalyst concentration on asphaltene conversion and product distribution

Ngoc Thuy Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of catalyst concentration on the reaction performance of slurry phase hydrocracking of vacuum residue. Results showed that high catalyst concentrations could suppress secondary cracking reactions and alter the conversion behavior of asphaltenes, leading to the proposal of equations for coke formation onset and a kinetic model. Overall, the transformation of residue to coke was dominant in non-catalytic hydrocracking and the coke formation rate decreased significantly with increasing catalyst concentration.

Sustainable design of the household water treatment systems using a novel integrated fuzzy QFD and LINMAP approach: a case study of Iran

Abdolvahhab Fetanat et al.

Summary: The paper analyzes the sustainability indicators related to designing household water treatment systems (HWTS) to achieve sustainable HWTS. Thirteen criteria in environmental, economic, social, and technical aspects have been considered to evaluate the impact of these criteria on HWTS. By integrating quality function deployment (QFD) and linear programming technique for multidimensional analysis of preference (LINMAP) under fuzzy environment, the study aims to guide HWTS manufacturers in sustainable development. The findings suggest that operation and maintenance costs are the most important criteria in customer requirements, while purchasing power is the most important in design requirements for sustainability strategies in water treatment systems.
