Sustainability of hydrogen refuelling stations for trains using electrolysers

Carlos Funez Guerra et al.

Summary: Hydrogen has the potential to become a powerful energy vector with clean, sustainable, and flexible alternatives in different sectors. The study focuses on performing a techno-economic analysis for hydrogen refuelling stations to supply a fleet of 20 hydrogen-powered trains, showing that using hydrogen as an alternative fuel for trains is a sustainable and profitable solution. The economic analysis concludes that negotiating a lower electricity cost, setting a higher hydrogen selling price, and meeting specific operating hours and system capacity requirements are key factors for a successful implementation.
