The value relevance of risk-related disclosure: Does the tone of disclosure matter?

Tamer Elshandidy et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the value relevance of risk-related disclosure for investors in the UK market. The study finds that the aggregate risk information is not statistically observable unless its tone is considered. Specifically, upside risk disclosure increases stock prices while downside risk disclosure decreases stock prices. The study also finds variations in the value relevance of risk information based on firms' growth and profitability.
