Sample Preparation Biases in Automated Quantitative Mineralogical Analysis of Mine Wastes

Nima Saberi et al.

Summary: Mineralogical information is crucial for predicting and understanding the leaching behavior of mine waste rock and tailings in the long term. However, biases introduced during sample preparation make the collection of quantitative mineralogical data challenging. This study investigates potential artifacts in granular sample specimen preparation for mineralogical analysis, using synthetic reference materials, soluble mineral (gypsum), and pulverized weathered waste rock samples. The results highlight the importance of quantifying potential sources of error in sample preparation for accurate mineralogical studies on mine wastes.

Utilisation of Enhanced Thresholding for Non-Opaque Mineral Segmentation in Optical Image Analysis

Andrei Poliakov et al.

Summary: Reliable information about mineral abundance, association, liberation, and textural characteristics is crucial for optimizing downstream processing of ores, which can be obtained through Optical Image Analysis (OIA) in reflected light. However, segmenting non-opaque minerals like quartz has always been problematic due to their similar reflectivity to the surrounding epoxy. This paper presents a sophisticated segmentation mechanism for improved segmentation of non-opaque minerals.

Novel technique for the preparation and analysis of powder-based polished sections by automated optical Mineralogy: Part 1-Comparative study of representativity

Benjamin De Castro et al.

Summary: Reflected optical microscopy is an affordable technique used for automated quantitative mineralogical analysis. The epoxy resin commonly used for polished section preparation causes biased results due to preferential sedimentation of particles. This study presents a new resin, acrylic resin, which provides ready-to-analyze polished sections in less than three hours without introducing bias.

Automated mineralogical characterization using optical microscopy: Review and recommendations

Benjamin De Castro et al.

Summary: Automated mineralogical quantification is important in geometallurgy, with automated scanning electron microscopes being commonly used. However, automated optical microscopes are less commonly used in the mining industry. The underutilization of automated mineralogical characterization in mining operations is mainly due to its high capital cost and limited accessibility. Reflected optical microscopy, on the other hand, is a more accessible and less restrictive device for automated quantitative mineralogical analysis, particularly for characterizing mining products containing valuable opaque minerals.

Utilising convolutional neural networks to perform fast automated modal mineralogy analysis for thin-section optical microscopy

Edwin J. Y. Koh et al.

Summary: Thin section microscopy traditionally used for mineralogy in exploration has limitations in visual detection, but deep learning algorithms like CNNs can automate the process for quicker identification. SOLO v2 algorithm outperforms Mask R-CNN in identifying and segmenting minerals, achieving faster speed in estimating mineralogy and particle size distribution.
