Droplet impacting dynamics: Recent progress and future aspects

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: Droplet impact behaviours are widely used in various fields such as self-cleaning, painting and coating, corrosion of turbine blades and aircraft, separation and oil repellency, anti-icing, heat transfer and droplet electricity generation, etc. The wetting behaviours and impact dynamics of droplets on solid and liquid surfaces involve complex interfacial interactions. Modulating droplet dynamics through specific surface morphology and hydrophobic/hydrophilic patterns is a promising direction for related applications. This review provides a detailed overview of droplet impact behaviours and heat transfer processes influenced by various factors, including wetting theory, impinging droplet parameters, and their effects on dynamics and heat transfer. Potential applications, existing concerns, challenges, and future perspectives are also discussed.

Cooling effect of droplet impacting on heated solid surface

MingJun Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the cooling effect and mechanisms of single droplet impacting on a heated solid surface by using two noncontact measurement techniques. Four typical impact regimes were observed and a comprehensive map based on non-dimensional analysis was built to describe the relationships among them. Empirical correlations were acquired to predict the non-dimensional maximum spreading diameter.

A new scaling number reveals droplet dynamics on vibratory surfaces

Mingkai Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of external vibration on droplet behaviors and reveals a quantitative relationship between vibration-induced dynamic pressure and droplet dynamics through a specific scaling number. The findings provide a new dimension and framework for understanding and controlling droplet dynamics. The study's findings also have potential applications in energy generation, paint deposition, and heat transfer.

Experimental study on the secondary droplet formation mechanism when droplet impacting on superheated surface

Mingjing Chen et al.

Summary: In this paper, a visual experimental study is conducted to investigate the effects of droplets impacting on a superheated wall. The mechanisms of secondary droplet generation are discussed based on sequence images and the size and velocity distribution of the secondary droplets are analyzed through image processing. Furthermore, an edge-breaking model is proposed and validated with experimental results.

Dynamic characteristics of droplet impact on vibrating superhydrophobic substrate

Chensen Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of droplets on superhydrophobic solid surfaces vibrating in the vertical direction was investigated using many-body dissipative particle dynamics. The study revealed that one characteristic phenomenon of droplets impacting vibrating substrate is the occurrence of multiple contacts before the final rebound, and the probability of impact phase is affected by the vibrating frequency.

Hydrodynamic analysis of the energy dissipation of droplets on vibrating superhydrophobic surfaces

Jing Li et al.

Summary: This paper presents experimental and numerical methods to describe the hydrodynamic process of vibration-induced droplet detachment from a superhydrophobic surface. The study investigates droplet dynamics under different vibration and impact parameters from an energy conversion perspective. The results show that droplet morphology evolution and energy dissipation are influenced by phase angle, spreading diameter, and impact velocity.

Motion of adhering droplets induced by overlapping of gravitational and periodical acceleration

B. Barwari et al.

Summary: This experimental work investigates the motion behavior of adhering water droplets under the influence of gravity and harmonic surface vibration. Different motion patterns and regimes are observed based on various process parameters, such as droplet volume, plate inclination, frequency, and acceleration. The analysis shows that increasing acceleration leads to chaotic contour deformation of the droplet, while different frequencies may cause the droplet to either start moving or be decomposed into smaller droplets.

Retraction dynamics of a water droplet impacting onto a microgrooved hydrophobic surface at different velocities and surface temperatures

Yee Li Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of groove orientation, impact velocity, and surface temperature on the retraction dynamics of a water droplet with grooved hydrophobic surfaces. It was found that increasing impact velocity delayed the initiation of droplet retraction and the retraction rate was independent of groove orientation and impact velocity during the early stage. Additionally, increasing surface temperature resulted in anisotropic retraction of the droplet.
