Hot mixing: Mechanistic insights into the durability of ancient Roman concrete

Linda M. Seymour et al.

Summary: This study investigates the durability of ancient Roman concretes using a multiscale correlative elemental and chemical mapping approach. The analysis reveals that the Romans employed hot mixing with quicklime in conjunction with or instead of slaked lime, resulting in the retention of large surface area lime clasts within the mortar matrix. Inspired by these findings, modern lime clast-containing cementitious mixtures were developed and tested, demonstrating their self-healing potential and paving the way for more durable and sustainable concrete formulations.

The Calcium Looping process for energy storage: Insights from in situ XRD analysis

Santiago Medina-Carrasco et al.

Summary: This study utilized in situ XRD analysis to investigate the multicycle calcination/carbonation process of limestone and dolomite, revealing new insights into the progressive loss of carbonation reactivity of CaO derived from calcination. The presence of MgO crystals in dolomite inhibits sintering and growth of CaO crystals, leading to higher reactivity compared to limestone. The growth of CaO crystallite size and decline in reactivity with increasing cycles highlights the incomplete carbonation process.

First-principles-based microkinetic rate equation theory for oxygen carrier reduction in chemical looping

Zhenshan Li

Summary: A theoretical scheme coupling elemental surface reaction mechanisms with bulk diffusion of lattice oxygen was proposed to model the reduction kinetics of oxygen carriers in chemical looping, using a first-principle-based microkinetic rate equation theory. The kinetic parameters were calculated directly using transition state theory and density functional theory, without the need for fitting with experimental data. The developed theory accurately predicted the reduction kinetics of a perovskite oxygen carrier under different conditions and analyzed the effects of surface reaction and bulk diffusion on the overall reaction rate.

Nucleation and growth kinetics of CaCO3 crystals in the presence of foreign monovalent ions

Freddy Liendo et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the impact of different monovalent ions on the nucleation and growth rates of CaCO3 precipitation. Results show that the use of Na2CO3 led to faster nucleation kinetics, while (NH4)2CO3 stabilized vaterite and hindered its transformation. The growth rate was found to be influenced by crystal size and magma density, with the ion effect likely related to the ionic radius of the foreign ion.

Low-Temperature Catalytic Dry Reforming of Methane over Pd Promoted Ni-CaO-Ca12Al14O33 Multifunctional Catalyst

Chengxiong Dang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the effective catalysis of dry reforming of methane at 600 degrees C by Pd-promoted Ni-CaO-Ca12Al14O33 multifunctional adsorbent/catalyst materials with high CO2 and CH4 conversion rates. The presence of Pd enhances CH4 dissociation activity and allows for reversible encapsulation and release of Ni particles to prevent sintering. The catalyst also shows long-term stability due to easy removal of active carbon species by CO2 and CaCO3.

Rate equation theory for the hydrogenation kinetics of Mg-based materials

Jinzhi Cai et al.

Summary: The traditional shrinking-core model with a uniform solid product layer is insufficient to predict the kinetic transition behavior of H2 adsorption reactions. This study proposes a new model based on the inward growth of solid products on the solid surface, which shows improved prediction accuracy for various Mg-based materials. The model can also be used to analyze intraparticle diffusion and the impact of particle microstructure changes.
