Macroeconomic influences on M&A deal outcomes: An analysis of domestic and cross-border M&As in developed and emerging economies

Deepak Kumar et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of macroeconomic factors on the abandonment of domestic and cross-border M&A deals in BRICS and G7 countries. The findings highlight the differences in financial abilities and strategic mindsets between developed (G7) and emerging (BRICS) countries. Macroeconomic changes have varying effects on deal abandonments. The study provides insights for firms to create differentiated strategies for M&A negotiations and for policymakers to frame policies influencing M&A outcomes.

Central bank lending facility and investment efficiency of non-SOEs: evidence from China

Xiao-Lin Li et al.

Summary: Despite the increasing use of central bank lending facilities in China, their effectiveness and economic impacts on the real economy remain unclear. This study finds that the medium-term lending facility (MLF) improves the investment efficiency of Chinese non-SOEs by reducing credit constraints, agency costs, and operating risk. The effect is more pronounced for smaller non-SOEs with higher executive compensation and those in markets with weaker banking competition and financial development.

Does managerial ability drive frequent acquisitions? The role of strategic agency, firm innovativeness, and environmental uncertainty

Chandra S. Mishra

Summary: The strategic agency hypothesis suggests that highly capable managers have the foresight to search for and seize innovative opportunities in distant regions. Contrary to conventional theories, which propose that managers conduct myopic searches for growth opportunities, we tested this hypothesis by investigating the relationship between strategic managerial ability and a firm's likelihood of engaging in frequent acquisitions. Our findings indicate that managers with high strategic ability are more inclined to pursue frequent acquisitions when the acquiring firm is innovative and operates in a risky environment. This supports the strategic agency hypothesis, suggesting that managers with strategic foresight are able to make timely acquisitions to capture growth opportunities.

Capital market liberalization and systemic risk of non-financial firms: Evidence from Chinese Stock Connect scheme

Xiao-Lin Li et al.

Summary: This paper examines the causal effect of capital market liberalization on the systemic risk of non-financial firms in China. It finds that capital market liberalization significantly raises the systemic risk of non-financial firms, especially those with more concentrated supply chains and more reliance on trade credit. The study also provides evidence that regulatory measures implemented during the liberalization of China's capital market can mitigate the adverse effects of liberalization on the systemic risk of non-financial firms.

The impact of exchange rate policy uncertainty shock on Chinese energy firms' risk-taking

Xiao-Lin Li et al.

Summary: This study examines the causal effect of exchange rate policy uncertainty shock on risk-taking behavior of Chinese energy firms. The findings reveal that the shock increases risk-taking through stimulating government subsidies and financial asset investment. State-owned energy firms are more affected by the shock through government subsidies, while non-state-owned energy firms are more affected through financial asset investment. The impact of the shock is weaker for energy firms with better growth opportunity and governance structure.

Does policy uncertainty predict the death of M&A deals?

Man Dang et al.

Summary: Using a comprehensive sample of U.S. M&A deals from 2000 through 2020, this study examines the impact of policy uncertainty on deal cancellation. The findings suggest that policy uncertainty is a significant predictor of deal failure, and there is a negative association between policy uncertainty and target firm stock price levels. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between policy uncertainty and external investments through M&A.

Measuring Geopolitical Risk

Dario Caldara et al.

Summary: This paper presents a news-based measure of adverse geopolitical events and their risks. The geopolitical risk index is particularly high during significant historical events such as world wars, the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and after 9/11. Higher geopolitical risk leads to lower investment and employment, as well as increased probability of disasters and larger downside risks. This risk is driven by both the threat and occurrence of adverse geopolitical events. Industry- and firm-level indicators also show that investment declines more in industries exposed to geopolitical risk, and higher firm-level geopolitical risk is associated with lower investment.

How does economic policy uncertainty affect cross-border M&A: Evidence from Chinese firms

Wanli Li et al.

Summary: Based on the data of Chinese cross-border mergers and acquisitions in 29 countries from 2008 to 2017, this study empirically examines the impact of economic policy uncertainty triggered by the financial crisis on the scale and performance of M&A behavior. The results indicate that economic policy uncertainty in the host country significantly reduces the scale of cross-border M&A for Chinese enterprises, with a more pronounced effect on non-state-owned enterprises. Additionally, economic policy uncertainty in the host country exhibits a U-shaped influence on short-term M&A performance and a negative impact on mid-term M&A performance.

Shadow banking business and firm risk-taking: Evidence from China

Deng-Kui Si et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of non-financial firms' shadow banking business on their risk-taking using annual firm-level data from China between 2003 and 2019. The findings indicate that the shadow banking business significantly increases firm risk-taking. This impact is particularly pronounced in firms facing greater financing constraints and having poorer corporate governance, as well as during periods of loose monetary conditions and severe financial stress. The study also identifies increasing commercial credit, reducing main business performance, and eroding the quality of information disclosure as the channels through which shadow banking affects firms' risk-taking. The results underscore the importance of improving external supervision and internal governance to mitigate firms' short-sighted involvement in shadow banking and the resulting financial risks.

What determines mergers and acquisitions in BRICS countries: Liquidity, exchange rate or innovation?

Siva Kameswari Vissa et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of liquidity, international competitiveness, and innovation on domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisition (M&A) transactions in BRICS nations over 25 years. The results suggest a synchronized alignment between macroeconomic determinants and business cycles, which drive M&A activities. High liquidity drives domestic M&A, followed by innovation. Inbound M&A volume is influenced by exchange rate parity and liquidity, while outbound M&A volume is influenced by liquidity, exchange rate parity, and innovation.

Economic policy uncertainty and shadow banking: Firm-level evidence from China

Deng-Kui Si et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of economic policy uncertainty on shadow banking activities of nonfinancial enterprises in China. The findings suggest a positive effect of economic policy uncertainty on shadow banking activities, especially in state-owned enterprises and firms with high external financing dependence. Financing constraints and yield spreads between financial and real investments are identified as the main channels through which economic policy uncertainty influences firms' shadow banking business.

Trade policy uncertainty, political connection and government subsidy: Evidence from Chinese energy firms

Xiao-Lin Li et al.

Summary: This study finds that trade policy uncertainty leads to an increase in government subsidies for energy firms, especially for those with political connections. Additionally, firms with poor sales performance and in less marketized regions receive more subsidies when politically connected. Moreover, subsidies promote firms' fixed asset investments and innovations but decrease their overall investment efficiency.

Summary: The study finds strong synchronicity among monetary policy, financial cycles, and business cycles in China during 1998-2018. Spillovers among them are bi-directional and time-varying. After the global financial crisis, stock market cycle replaces business cycle as the main risk transmitter, while monetary policy and credit cycles act as risk receivers.
