Estimation of limit cycle amplitude after onset threshold of thermoacoustic Stirling engine

Shu-Han Hsu et al.

Summary: This study experimentally observes the amplitude saturation process of spontaneous pressure oscillations in the thermoacoustic Stirling engine and finds that the nonlinear effects of the flow resistance of the stacked-screen regenerators decrease the amplitude of sound pressure oscillations with increasing Reynolds number. The measured stability limits agree with the theoretical calculations by adjusting r0.

Theoretical performance characteristics of a travelling-wave phase-change thermoacoustic heat pump

Rui Yang et al.

Summary: This article presents a theoretical investigation on phase-change thermoacoustic heat pumping. The results show that phase change can significantly increase the cooling power and coefficient of performance (COP), but the enhancement in COP only occurs under small temperature differences. The gap in observed performance between the ideal model and the full system is due to the deviation of the acoustic field from the requirements for effective enhancement under large temperature differences.

Performance study of solar aided molten carbonate fuel cell-steam turbine-combined cooling, heating and power system with different schemes

Ziyi Lu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new molten carbonate fuel cell-steam turbine-combined cooling, heating and power (MCFC-ST-CCHP) system and investigates its performance with three different solar energy integration modes. The study finds that the best solar integration mode is to replace part of the heating load of high pressure boiler drum. Furthermore, the impact of solar irradiation intensity on the system is also examined.

Justifying performance of thermo-acoustic Stirling engines based on a novel lumped mechanical model

A. R. Tavakolpour-Saleh et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel lumped mechanical model incorporating modern control theory to investigate performance and startup condition of thermo-acoustic Stirling engines (TASEs). The study reveals that TASEs can be considered as physical regulators from the viewpoint of modern control theory. Design parameters and quality index are analyzed to evaluate resonance phenomenon in the TASEs, and the proposed mathematical model incorporating the control-based design technique is validated using practical data of three prototype engines.

Mode transition in a standing-wave thermoacoustic engine: A numerical study

Geng Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mode transition phenomenon in a standing-wave thermoacoustic engine using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). It is found that with increasing temperature ratio, the TAE undergoes a series of bifurcations, leading to different oscillation modes. Nonlinear mode competition occurs during saturation, and the acoustic energy density, intensity and efficiency increase with increasing temperature ratio.
