Collaborative recycling of red mud and FGD-gypsum into multi-shell cold bonded lightweight aggregates: Synergistic effect, structure design and application in sustainable concrete

Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: Novel multi-shell CLAs were prepared by synergistically using red mud (RM) and flue gas desul-furization gypsum (FGD), resulting in improved strength, reduced density, and water absorption. The main minerals of the CLAs were ettringite, C(N)-A-S-H, and U-phase, contributing to their strength development. The multi-shell structure, including a lightweight core, intermediate shell, and hydrophobic outer shell, further decreased density and water absorption. These CLAs were used as aggregates for lightweight aggregate concrete (LWC) preparation, achieving good workability and mechanical strength. The carbon emissions and cost of the LWC were significantly lower compared to traditional concrete. Overall, this research provides a green approach for converting RM and FGD into value-added CLAs, with potential application in sustainable concrete.

Producing a gypsum-based self-leveling mortar for subfloor modified by polycarboxylate admixture (PCE)

D. B. P. Silva et al.

Summary: Self-leveling mortar is a fluid cement-based material which eliminates the need for thickening. It provides shorter execution times, better thermal and acoustic properties, and eliminates the need for expansion joints in large areas. The addition of superplasticizer additive (PCE) enhances the properties of the mortar, although it increases the setting times.

Recycling phosphogypsum as the sole calcium oxide source in calcium sulfoaluminate cement production and solidification of phosphorus

Shuang Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of three phosphorus impurities on the decomposition of CaSO4, formation of minerals, microstructure of the clinker, and the hydration and mechanical properties of the cement in the production of calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement using phosphogypsum (PG) as the sole CaO source. The results indicated that different phosphorus impurities have significant effects on the hydration reaction and curing time of the cement.

Modification of phosphogypsum using circulating fluidized bed fly ash and carbide slag for use as cement retarder

Beixing Li et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively modified phosphogypsum using carbide slag, circulating fluidized bed (CFB) fly ash, and other solid wastes, and investigated the influence of material ratio and aging time on the modification effect. The modification mechanism of carbide slag and CFB fly ash on phosphogypsum and the effect of modified phosphogypsum on the hydration characteristics of Portland cement were revealed. The results show that the modified phosphogypsum effectively reduces the contents of soluble phosphorus and soluble fluorine, increases the pH value, enhances the strength of phosphogypsum, and improves the retardation effect of Portland cement.

Preparation and 3D printing building application of sulfoaluminate cementitious material using industrial solid waste

Changzai Ren et al.

Summary: The iron and steel industry, the power industry, and the mining industry in China produce large volumes of industrial solid waste, causing significant environmental harm. This paper studied the feasibility of using different types of industrial solid waste to prepare eco-friendly construction materials and further develop 3D printing materials. The results showed that this method has the potential to fully utilize industrial solid waste and promote sustainable development.

Summary: This study quantifies the CO2 emissions of solid waste-based sulphoaluminate cement (SW-SAC) from preparation to utilization, considering the impact of supplementary cementitious materials. The results show that SW-SAC has lower carbon emissions compared to traditional Portland cement (PC), but additional efforts are needed for carbon neutrality.

Influence of polycarboxylate superplasticizer, citric acid and their combination on the hydration and workability of calcium sulfoaluminate cement

Rachid Belhadi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of citric acid, PCE, and their combination on the hydration and workability of CSA, finding that citric acid could help retain the dispersion efficiency of PCE over time, although it also decreased the initial dispersion efficiency. A dispersion model was proposed to describe the mechanism of action of these admixtures on CSA.
