Intensified Nd extraction in small channels for NdFeB magnet recycling

Charlotte Pheasey et al.

Summary: Neodymium (Nd) was continuously extracted from aqueous solutions using trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) dissolved in the ionic liquid 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([C4mim][Tf2N]) in small channel contactors. The study confirmed a 1:6 Nd:TOPO extraction mechanism at high initial Nd concentrations in a nitric acid aqueous phase. The effects of mixture velocity and residence time on the extraction efficiency and mass transfer coefficient were investigated.

Ionic Liquids and Deep-Eutectic Solvents in Extractive Metallurgy: Mismatch Between Academic Research and Industrial Applicability

Koen Binnemans et al.

Summary: Over the past 10-20 years, many academic papers have described the benefits of ionic liquids (ILs) and deep-eutectic solvents (DESs) in extractive metallurgy processes. However, despite being hailed as game-changers, these neoteric solvents have not made significant commercial breakthroughs. This paper reflects on the reasons for their lack of impact, including issues with viscosity, chemical stability, recycling, and cost, and suggests that a deeper understanding of hydrometallurgical processes at the molecular level is more likely to lead to innovation.

Can 3D printing solve the numbering-up challenge of microfluidic reactors?

Joren van Stee et al.

Summary: This study presents a reproducible production method for microreactor manifolds using commercially available and 3D printed parts. It was found that tubes and fittings alone cannot produce reliable and reproducible manifolds. However, a hybrid manifold consisting of a 3D printed distributor and commercial tubes and fittings showed a significant reduction in maldistribution for both single- and two-phase flow. Furthermore, the surface tension of the applied liquid was shown to have a significant effect on maldistribution, possibly due to the presence of air bubbles.

Numbering-up liquid-liquid systems in microfluidic reactors: A parametric study

Joren van Stee et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that flowrate, number of channels, hydrodynamic resistances, and phase ratio have a significant impact on the maldistribution in parallel microfluidic reactors. Advanced statistical methods, such as Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), can provide additional insights and partially compensate for variability between experiments.

An effective process for the separation of U(VI), Th(IV) from rare earth elements by using ionic liquid Cyphos IL 104

Jiawei Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, a homemade membrane emulsification circulation (MEC) extractor was used to separate U(VI) and Th(IV) from rare earth elements. The results showed that Cyphos IL 104 could reach extraction equilibrium within 30 minutes and had strong phase separation ability. The extraction efficiencies of U(VI), Th(IV), La(III), Eu(III) and Yb (III) increased with increasing pH. Effective separation of U(VI) and Th(IV) could be achieved using HCl and H2 SO4 in the stripping experiments. Cyphos IL 104 reacted with U(VI) and Th(IV) through chelation mechanism. The proposed flowchart provided an efficient separation method for U(VI) and Th(IV) from rare earth elements.
