An LES study of the wake flow dynamics and heat transfer characteristics of two side-by-side finite wall-mounted square cylinders

A. Sohankar et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the wake flow dynamics and heat transfer characteristics of two side-by-side finite wall-mounted square cylinders through large-eddy simulations. It found that the flow regime transitions and induces changes in drag coefficient, vortex shedding frequency, and Nusselt number. The study also reveals the influence of flow interference and the intensity of turbulence generated by the deflected gap flow.

Modal analysis of propeller wake dynamics under different inflow conditions

Cong Sun et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the evolution mechanisms of propeller wakes from near to far field under different inflow conditions. It was found that turbulent inflow contributes to the destabilization process of the tip vortex system by accelerating the interference between adjacent tip-vortex structures and intensifying the instability motion of the tip vortex. The Sparsity-Promoting Dynamic Mode Decomposition (SPDMD) successfully selected the influential dynamic modes for the approximation of the snapshot sequence.

Sicheng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the geometrical and dynamic properties of the turbulent/non-turbulent interface in separation and reattachment flow. The interface properties vary consistently with the vortex structure and are strongly influenced by the shear motion of the fluid and the shedding vortex. This study provides new insights into turbulent diffusion and the effects of separated flow and shedding vortices on the interface properties.

Simulation study on flow behavior around a wall-mounted finite height square cylinder with corner chamfer

Ahmad Hammad et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of applying corner chamfer on the wake of a square cylinder and understands the impact of various chamfer sizes on flow characteristics. The results show that the application of corner chamfer decreases the wake and improves the flow, such as reducing drag coefficient, minimizing the horseshoe vortex zone, and shrinking the wake region behind the cylinder.

Wall-Modeled Large Eddy Simulation and Detached Eddy Simulation of Wall-Mounted Separated Flow via OpenFOAM

Xiang Ren et al.

Summary: Considering the grid requirements of high Reynolds flow, wall-modeled large eddy simulation (WMLES) and detached eddy simulation (DES) have become the main methods for near-wall turbulence. This study verifies the accuracy of the WMLES, SST-DES, and SA-DES methods in predicting flow separation and wake characteristics in three different separated flows. The results show that the methods can predict separation position accurately, but depend on grid scale and turbulent inflow for accurate simulation of certain flows.

Experimental and numerical investigation of turbulent wake flow around wall-mounted square cylinder of aspect ratio 2

Fei Wang et al.

Summary: Experimental and numerical data were obtained for the turbulent wake velocity fields around a short wall-mounted square cylinder in a thick turbulent boundary layer. Despite good comparisons in low-order statistics of velocity fields, a satisfactory reproduction of coherent structures was not guaranteed. While spatial patterns and dynamic performance showed great similarities between PIV and LES, differences were found in terms of turbulent kinetic energy contribution.

Sachidananda Behera et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of incoming shear flow on the wake behind a wall-mounted finite-length square cylinder, revealing that increasing shear parameters led to changes in shedding modes and significant effects on the downwash flow of the wake. The study also found that the turbulent kinetic energy associated with the cylinder wake had a maximum contribution from the transverse component of normal stress.
