Systematic studies on behaviors of ultra-high performance concrete subject to freezing and thawing cycles combining DIC technology

Fei Wang et al.

Summary: This study systematically evaluated the frost resistance of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) based on mechanical properties and cracking behaviors. After 300 freezing and thawing (FT) cycles, the tensile and flexural strength of UHPC decreased, while the tensile strain capacity remained constant. The FT action resulted in a more direct cracking path, shorter cracking time, and larger crack opening compared to water immersion. The findings provide valuable references for estimating the bearing capacity of UHPC structures in practical engineering.

Mechanical properties of high ductile alkali-activated fiber reinforced composites incorporating red mud under different curing conditions

Lili Kan et al.

Summary: This study developed an alkali-activated fiber reinforced composite using red mud, slag, and silica fume to produce a sustainable material with high ductility. The heat-cured composite exhibited excellent tensile strain capacity, despite a reduction in strength. Microscopic analysis showed that heat-curing resulted in a less compacted matrix formation in the composite. The addition of red mud did not alter the types of reaction products in the material, indicating potential for future eco-friendly, high-ductile cementless composites from waste materials.

A review on high-strength engineered cementitious composites (HS-ECC): Design, mechanical property and structural application

Yao Ding et al.

Summary: This paper comprehensively reviews the important properties of high strength engineered cementitious composites (HS-ECC) and suggests future research directions and potential applications. It covers the design theory, static and dynamic properties, size effect, energy properties, and bond behavior between steel bar and HS-ECC matrix. The critical applications of HS-ECC in infrastructure repair and construction are discussed, along with the possibility of using recycled materials or industrial by-products as binders or fibers in HS-ECC.

New development of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC)

Jiang Du et al.

Summary: Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) has superior workability, mechanical properties, and durability compared with conventional concrete, but faces challenges like autogenous shrinkage and insufficient flexural/tensile properties. Research on state-of-the-art technologies for optimizing UHPC mixtures can advance its application and further research.

Experimental study on chloride penetration in cracked engineered cementitious composite under soak-dry cycles

Jun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of cracks in low shrinkage engineered cementitious composite (LSECC) on chloride penetration. It was found that a higher matrix strength or lower water to binder ratio in non-cracking LSECC leads to higher resistance of chloride penetration. Additionally, it was determined that there is a critical crack opening size that influences chloride penetration in cracked LSECC, with specific values for different water to binder ratios. Results also showed that even with larger crack widths, the chloride ion content along the crack path or at neighbors of the crack remains relatively low after multiple soak-dry cycles.

Mechanical properties of high ductile alkali-activated fiber reinforced composites with different curing ages

Lili Kan et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the preparation of high ductile alkali-activated fiber reinforced composite and experimental investigation of their mechanical properties at different curing ages. The results show an initial increase and subsequent stabilization of compressive and tensile strength with increasing ages, while the tensile strain capacities remain at a higher level. Additionally, parameters at the meso-scale can be well correlated with the tensile properties of the materials at different ages.

Freeze-thaw resistance of Ultra-High performance concrete: Dependence on concrete composition

Zhe Lu et al.

Summary: The specific composition of ultra-high performance concrete plays a crucial role in its freeze-thaw resistance. Lowering the water binder ratio can improve freeze-thaw resistance, while factors like steel fiber, silica fume, and fly ash can also enhance the resistance at proper levels. Among these factors, water binder ratio has the most significant impact on freeze-thaw resistance.
