Trends in Smoking Prevalence and Intensity between 2010 and 2018: Implications for Tobacco Control in China

Guoting Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the trends in smoking prevalence and intensity in China between 2010 and 2018. The results show a decline in smoking prevalence and intensity, suggesting some progress in tobacco control. However, stronger anti-tobacco measures are needed to achieve the goal of reducing smoking prevalence to less than 20% by 2030.

Home environment and noise disturbance in a national sample of multi-family buildings in Sweden-associations with medical symptoms

Juan Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that noise disturbance is associated with medical symptoms. Factors such as younger age, smoking, warmer climate, higher municipality population density, and different building factors like renting the apartment and construction period 1961-1985 may contribute to noise disturbance.

Indoor PM2.5, VOCs and asthma outcomes: A systematic review in adults and their home environments

C. A. Paterson et al.

Summary: This study found insufficient evidence to determine the effect of indoor PM2.5 on adult asthma in higher-income countries, but strong evidence to suggest that volatile organic compounds, especially aromatic compounds and aliphatic compounds, are associated with increased asthma symptoms. Therefore, the importance of appropriate use and storage of chemicals in the home environment needs to be better promoted to prevent poor health outcomes.

Asthma and allergic rhinitis among young parents in China in relation to outdoor air pollution, climate and home environment

Juan Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that urbanization, NO2, and traffic exhaust can increase the risk of adult asthma and AR. Higher ambient temperature was related to more asthma but less AR. Indoor animals such as cats, dogs, rats/mice, and cockroaches were associated with asthma or AR. Indoor chemical sources such as redecoration and new furniture were also other risk factors.

Associations between indoor environment in residential buildings in wet and dry seasons and health of students in upper northern Thailand

Tippawan Prapamontol et al.

Summary: A repeated questionnaire study on home environment and health in junior high school students in upper northern Thailand revealed associations between dampness-related exposure, indoor mold, windowpane condensation, cat keeping, environmental tobacco smoke, and biomass burning with six medical symptoms. Further investigations on environmental health effects in subtropical areas in wet and dry seasons are recommended.

Effects of mechanical ventilation on indoor air quality and occupant health status in energy-efficient homes: A longitudinal field study

Ah-Young Lim et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the indoor air quality (IAQ) levels and daily health symptoms of adults and children living in energy-efficient homes (EEHs) compared to conventional buildings. The results showed that EEHs had lower indoor concentrations of pollutants, stable indoor temperature and humidity levels, and an association between improved IAQ parameters and reduced risk of daily symptoms. Symptoms like eye fatigue and skin dryness were reported, but were not statistically significantly different from those in conventional buildings.
