A signature of saliva-derived exosomal small RNAs as predicting biomarker for esophageal carcinoma: a multicenter prospective study

Kai Li et al.

Summary: A study focused on tRNA-derived small RNAs in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has developed a non-invasive biomarker based on salivary exosomes. The study identified specific tsRNA and a previously undocumented small RNA in the salivary exosomes of ESCC patients, tissues, and cells. The bi-signature composed of these small RNAs was able to effectively discriminate ESCC patients from controls and provide prognostic information. Furthermore, the bi-signature can be used to select patients who would benefit from adjuvant therapy.

Analysis of extracellular vesicle DNA at the single-vesicle level by nano-flow cytometry

Haisheng Liu et al.

Summary: This study provides direct and conclusive experimental evidence for an in-depth understanding of how DNA is associated with extracellular vesicles (EVs). The study reveals that EVs carry naked DNA or DNA associated with non-vesicular entities. The quantity and distribution of EV-DNA vary depending on the cell type, with a high heterogeneity observed. The study also shows that external EV-DNA is mainly localized on smaller EVs, while internal EV-DNA is packaged inside larger EVs. The predominant form of EV-DNA is double-stranded DNA, and it is not associated with histone proteins.

Extracellular vesicles in cancer diagnostics and therapeutics

Adeeb Shehzad et al.

Summary: Cell-to-cell interactions within the tumor microenvironment play a crucial role in cancer promotion, development, and malignant transformation. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), including exosomes and microvesicles, mediate the transportation of regulatory molecules between cells and to distant sites, contributing to the formation of premetastatic niches and the progression of malignancies. EVs have potential applications in disease diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutics in the field of cancer research.
