Effects of forest conversion to rubber plantation and of replanting rubber trees on soil organic carbon pools in a tropical moist climate zone

Jumpei Toriyama et al.

Summary: The research revealed that soils from first-rotation rubber plantations were more impacted by previous natural forests in terms of SOC stock, while second-rotation plantation soils had lower SOC levels. Significant losses in SOC pools were observed between natural forest and rubber plantations, particularly within the initial 10 years of conversion.

Land use types with different fertilization management affected isotope ratios of bulk and water-extractable C and N of soils in an intensive agricultural area

Young-Jae Jeong et al.

Summary: This study investigated variations in stable isotope ratios of carbon (delta C-13) and nitrogen (delta N-15) of agricultural soils under different land uses and fertilization management. Agricultural soils had higher delta C-13 and delta N-15 than forest soils, reflecting repeated manure and compost applications and higher N loss. Differences in isotopic compositions among agricultural soils were found, suggesting that delta C-13 and delta N-15 could be used as chemical indicators to evaluate the effects of manure and compost application on soil C and N dynamics.

Apportioning sedimentary organic matter sources and its degradation state: Inferences based on aliphatic hydrocarbons, amino acids and δ15N

Yadav Ankit et al.

Summary: The sources and state of sedimentary organic matter in freshwater aquatic systems play a crucial role in understanding the carbon cycling in terrestrial environments. Systematic investigations focusing on the source and fate of organic matters within eutrophic lakes are still unclear. This study in Ahansar Lake from Kashmir valley, India, utilized amino acids, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and bulk geochemical proxies to understand the distribution, sources, and state of sedimentary organic matter, showcasing enhanced aquatic productivity and significant organic matter preservation in the lake system.

Residential and agricultural soils dominate soil organic matter loss in a typical agricultural watershed of subtropical China

Xuan Chen et al.

Summary: Loss of soil organic matter in agricultural watersheds poses a threat to the aquatic environment and increases greenhouse gas emissions. This study used stable isotopes and a Bayesian mixed model to quantify the contribution of different land-use types to sedimentary organic matter in a subtropical agricultural watershed in China. The findings indicate that vegetable and residential soils are the main contributors to soil organic matter loss.

Organic fertilizer reduced carbon and nitrogen in runoff and buffered soil acidification in tea plantations: Evidence in nutrient contents and isotope fractionations

Shaowen Xie et al.

Summary: Fertilization with rapeseed cake organic fertilizer resulted in improved soil properties and reduced nutrient runoff, while also affecting soil isotopic fractionation. The study demonstrates the potential of organic fertilization in preserving soil nutrient pools and mitigating environmental impacts.

Particulate and Dissolved Organic Matter in Stormwater Runoff Influences Oxygen Demand in Urbanized Headwater Catchments

Kelly M. McCabe et al.

Summary: Increasing inputs of organic matter driven by urbanization have led to declining dissolved oxygen concentrations in coastal ecosystems globally. Stormwater has been found to be a significant source of labile organic matter to receiving waters, particularly during the initial phase of runoff. Managing episodic stormwater discharge, especially particulate organic matter, is crucial for mitigating dissolved oxygen impairment in larger downstream systems.

Determination of the nitrogen isotope enrichment factor associated with ammonification and nitrification in unsaturated soil at different temperatures

Lu Yu et al.

Summary: This study conducted incubation experiments for the first time to quantitatively investigate the nitrogen isotope enrichment factor associated with ammonification in unsaturated soil, proposing a different calculation method for the epsilon(p/s) values during ammonification. Experimental results indicated that the isotope effect of volatilization during nitrification can be ignored. This work provides a novel approach for identifying crucial parameters for determining nitrate pollution sources in groundwater systems.

Rice straw cover decreases soil erosion and sediment-bound C, N, and P losses but increases dissolved organic C export from upland maize fields as evidenced by δ13C

Climatic and anthropogenic driving forces of the nitrogen cycling in a subtropical river basin

Hao Jiang et al.

Summary: This study used a multiple-isotopic approach to investigate nitrogen cycling at a basin scale, finding that climate and anthropogenic activities impact nitrogen cycling. The results showed that denitrification dominates nitrogen transformations in summer, while coupled nitrification-denitrification in soils after fertilization is responsible for isotopic fractionations in spring and autumn.

Aggregation, carbon, nitrogen, and natural abundance of 13C and 15N in soils under no-tillage system fertilized with injection and surface application of pig slurry for five years

Cremildo Antonio Luis Francisco et al.

Summary: The study found that injection of pig slurry into soils under no-tillage system is more efficient for improving soil chemical and physical attributes, and reducing C and N emissions than surface applications. Injection of pig slurry improved soil physical attributes and increased TOC and TN content, showing positive effects on soil protection.
