Photonics of time-varying media

Emanuele Galiffi et al.

Summary: This review comprehensively discusses the recent progress of time modulation in photonic metamaterials, including temporal switching, photonic time-crystals, and spatiotemporal modulation. It also reviews and provides perspectives on the applications of time modulation in nonreciprocity, synthetic motion, giant anisotropy, etc.

Cosmic String Interpretation of NANOGrav Pulsar Timing Data

John Ellis et al.

Summary: Pulsar timing data was used to set upper limits on a stochastic gravitational wave background, but recent findings from the NANOGrav Collaboration suggest a stochastic common-spectrum process, potentially related to cosmic strings. The SGWB signal identified by NANOGrav falls within a specific range of string tension values and could be measured by various detectors beyond the capabilities of LIGO.

Has NANOGrav Found First Evidence for Cosmic Strings?

Simone Blasi et al.

Summary: The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves has found strong evidence for a stochastic common-spectrum process affecting pulsar timing residuals, possibly emitted by a cosmic-string network. Future experiments will probe the entire viable parameter space of stable Nambu-Goto strings in relation to their tension and loop size.

Large Anisotropies of the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background from Cosmic Domain Walls

Jing Liu et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) generated by cosmic domain walls (DWs) due to quantum fluctuations of a light scalar field during inflation. The angular power spectrum of this SGWB is scale invariant and of observational interest, providing a unique opportunity to verify inflationary theories and detect inflation energy scales. Detecting the anisotropies of such SGWBs is possible with instruments like the Square Kilometer Array, and the common-spectrum process observed by NANOGrav could be linked to the SGWB from cosmic DWs.

Weifeng Ding et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the optical effects in Rindler space-time, derived light paths in WKB approximation, and explored the propagation characteristics using ABCD matrix optics method. The unique characteristics of beam propagation in an accelerated system were analyzed, revealing the uncertain relationship between transverse beam size and momentum, which coincides with quantization derivation.

Observation of the acceleration of light in a tapered optical fiber

Hui Ge et al.

Summary: The Unruh effect, a fascinating aspect of quantum fields in curved spacetime, remains a challenge for direct experimental detection of Unruh temperature. Gradient optical waveguides are proposed to achieve high effective Unruh temperature, but experimental realization is yet to be reported. This study uses a tapered fiber to simulate accelerated motion and obtains effective Unruh temperature, showing a dependence of leaky radiation on photon acceleration.

Simulating the escape of entangled photons from the event horizon of black holes in nonuniform optical lattices

Chong Sheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates quantum walks in a noninertial frame emulated by a nonuniform optical lattice, mathematically equivalent to a Schwarzschild black hole near the event horizon. The optical trapping of photons in such lattices displays counterintuitive escape phenomena and unique mechanisms distinct from Hawking radiation. Additionally, entanglement decay for maximally entangled states in the emulated noninertial frame is explored, paving the way for understanding quantum effects under general relativity on a tabletop platform.
