Core outcome measures for clinical effectiveness trials of nutritional and metabolic interventions in critical illness: an international modified Delphi consensus study evaluation (CONCISE)

T. W. Davies et al.

Summary: This study identified a core outcome set for nutritional and metabolic clinical research in critically ill adults, reaching consensus on essential domains and measurement instruments for use at 30 and 90 days post-randomisation. The CONCISE core outcome set provides internationally agreed minimum outcomes to guide future research.

Comparison of Ultrasound-Derived Muscle Thickness With Computed Tomography Muscle Cross-Sectional Area on Admission to the Intensive Care Unit: A Pilot Cross-Sectional Study

Kate J. Lambell et al.

Summary: Ultrasound-derived muscle thickness at various landmarks was found to correlate with CT muscle area at ICU admission. Combining muscle thickness at multiple landmarks improved the correlation with CT muscle area. The best-performing ultrasound model demonstrated good ability to identify patients with low CT muscle area.

Association between ultrasound quadriceps muscle status with premorbid functional status and 60-day mortality in mechanically ventilated critically ill patient: A single-center prospective observational study

Zheng-Yii Lee et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between muscle status, functional status, and 60-day mortality in critically ill patients. Results showed that quadriceps muscle layer thickness, rectus femoris cross-sectional area, and pennation angle decreased significantly over time. High nutrition risk, sarcopenia, and frailty at ICU admission were associated with lower muscle status and higher mortality rate.

Peripheral muscular ultrasound as outcome assessment tool in critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation: An observational cohort study

Diogo Oliveira Toledo et al.

Summary: This study found that ultrasound measurement of muscle thickness in the quadriceps muscle of critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation revealed muscle wasting, with greater loss of muscle thickness associated with worse outcomes.

Changes in muscle ultrasound for the diagnosis of intensive care unit acquired weakness in critically ill patients

Weiqing Zhang et al.

Summary: Measuring changes in muscle thickness and cross-sectional area using ultrasound can aid in diagnosing ICU-AW, with particular emphasis on the right rectus femoris muscle. Additionally, SOFA and APACHE II scores have good predictive power for ICU-AW on admission day.
