Mid-Holocene European climate revisited: New high-resolution regional climate model simulations using pollen-based land-cover

Gustav Strandberg et al.

Summary: This study investigates the climate and vegetation 6000 years ago using multiple models and finds that human activities may have already impacted European climate before the industrial revolution. The reconstructed land cover has been shown to significantly impact the simulated climate.

Pollen-Based Maps of Past Regional Vegetation Cover in Europe Over 12 Millennia-Evaluation and Potential

Esther Githumbi et al.

Summary: Accurate reconstructions of past vegetation cover are important to study environmental changes. Development of pollen-vegetation relationship models and spatial statistical models have allowed for estimation of plant abundance and creation of continuous maps of past plant cover. The first continuous time series of spatially complete maps of past plant cover across Europe during the Holocene have been presented, showing the change from open land to forest cover. The temporal and spatial continuity is relevant for land-use, land-cover, and climate research.

Pollen-based reconstruction of total land-cover change over the Holocene in the temperate steppe region of China: An attempt to quantify the cover of vegetation and bare ground in the past using a novel approach

Yuanhao Sun et al.

Summary: Fossil pollen data are essential for reconstructing ancient vegetation and land-cover changes. This study combines Sugita's REVEALS model and the Modern Analogue Technique (MAT) to estimate and reconstruct past actual vegetation cover using pollen data. The results are validated by comparing them with modern data.

European pollen-based REVEALS land-cover reconstructions for the Holocene: methodology, mapping and potentials

Esther Githumbi et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel and extensive pollen-based reconstruction of land cover in Europe over the past 11,700 years. The Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites (REVEALS) model is used to quantify vegetation cover from pollen records at a 1 degree x 1 degree spatial scale. The synthesis of relative pollen productivities (RPPs) for European plant taxa and the application of REVEALS to 1128 pollen records across Europe are discussed, highlighting the method's reliability and future potential.
