Uncertainty investigation of plume-chasing method for measuring on-road NOx emission factors of heavy-duty diesel vehicles

Zheming Tong et al.

Summary: The study developed a new on-board measurement system to investigate the uncertainties of on-road emission factors measured by the plume-chasing method, and found that the differences in EF estimations between plume-chasing and PEMS measurements decreased with increasing chasing speed. It also observed an overprediction of chasing-based EFs in strong crosswinds due to convective plume mixing from surrounding vehicular sources.

Evaluation of a cost-effective roadside sensor platform for identifying high emitters

Yicheng Shen et al.

Summary: A compact and cost-effective sensor platform was developed and evaluated in this study for efficient identification of high-emission vehicles. The platform successfully measured pollutant concentrations and derived emission factors, successfully identifying potential high emitters. This pilot test demonstrates the feasibility of a sensor-based system for high emitter identification.

Intermodal comparison of tailpipe emission rates between transit buses and private vehicles for on-road passenger transport

Tongchuan Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that modal shift from private vehicles to transit buses has the potential to reduce energy use and emissions from on-road passenger transport. Comparisons between these modes may be sensitive to factors such as vehicle size, fuel and powertrains, passenger load, and travel routes. Generally, bus emission rates on actual routes are higher than on hypothetical routes, while fully occupied buses are estimated to have significantly lower emissions per passenger-trip compared to single-occupancy private vehicles.

Variability of NO2/NOx Ratios in Multiple Microenvironments from On-Road and Near-Roadway Measurements

Sheng Xiang et al.

Summary: The spatial distribution of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in cities is crucial for improving health impact assessments for NO2 exposure. The study found a strong linear relationship between NO2/NOx ratios and ambient background O-3 in on-road and near-roadway microenvironments. Heavy-duty diesel vehicles (HDDVs) can serve as effective indicators of variability in NO2/NOx ratios.

Sensitivity of light duty vehicle tailpipe emission rates from simplified portable emission measurement systems to variation in engine volumetric efficiency

Tongchuan Wei et al.

Summary: Quantification of light-duty gasoline vehicle (LDGV) tailpipe emission rates can be accurately estimated using simplified and micro portable emission measurement systems. Various methods for estimating engine volumetric efficiency (VE) impact the accuracy of emission rate estimation, with intra-vehicle and inter-vehicle variability also affecting the estimates.
