Fabrication of chitosan membranes via aqueous phase separation: Comparing the use of acidic and alkaline dope solutions

Guoquan Tu et al.

Summary: This study compares the effects of acidic and alkaline dissolution mechanisms on the preparation of chitosan membranes. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is used to analyze the gelation behavior of chitosan and the mechanisms behind particle rejection. The study finds that the morphological evolution of the gelation layer significantly impacts the porous structure of the resulting chitosan membrane, affecting water permeability and particle rejection. The study highlights the importance of understanding the structure-performance relationship and provides valuable insights for improving chitosan membranes.

Whey Recovery Using Nanofiltration-like Forward Osmosis: Optical Coherence Tomography Based Approach to Understanding Fouling Behavior

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: Recovering nourishing compounds from whey wastewater is crucial, and forward osmosis (FO) with a nanofiltration (NF)-like membrane can enhance the efficiency of whey recovery. However, membrane fouling poses a challenge. This study used optical coherence tomography (OCT) to characterize fouling behavior and found that the back diffusion of divalent cations can increase initial deposition rate and specific resistance to water transfer.

Polyethersulfone-Quaternary Graphene Oxide-Sulfonated Polyethersulfone as a High-Performance Forward Osmosis Membrane Support Layer

Hasan Salehi et al.

Summary: In this study, a ternary nanocomposite membrane substrate consisting of polyethersulfone (PES), quaternary graphene oxide (QGO), and sulfonated polyethersulfone (SPES) was fabricated. The incorporation of an optimal loading of QGO significantly enhanced the hydrophilicity, porosity, and water permeability of the support layer. The effect of QGO on the morphology and performance of the polyamide rejection layer was also investigated, and it was found that the polyamide layer formed on a QGO-based substrate exhibited the highest water permeability. The forward osmosis test confirmed the positive impact of QGO incorporation on the performance of membrane substrates.

Effect of initial particle deposition rate on cake formation during dead-end microfiltration

Qi Han et al.

Summary: A non-monotonic correlation between initial particle deposition rate and extent of flux decline was observed during dead-end microfiltration. The network fouling model and experimental OCT characterization explained the counter-intuitive flux decline trends, providing valuable insights towards understanding membrane fouling phenomena.

Analyzing scaling behavior of calcium sulfate in membrane distillation via optical coherence tomography

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: This study used optical coherence tomography (OCT) to investigate calcium sulfate scaling in membrane distillation (MD), revealing that the reduction in evaporation rate is dominated by different mechanisms as crystalline particles grow and deposit on the membrane surface. The striping phenomenon visualized by mapping local growth rates provided evidence for hydrodynamic instability induced by coupled mass and heat transfer in MD.

Recent developments in layer-by-layer assembled systems application in water purification

Claudiu-Augustin Ghiorghita et al.

Summary: Electrostatically-based layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly is a versatile surface functionalization technique that allows the construction of complex three-dimensional architectures on various materials, with promising applications in water purification. The main strategies in this field include enhancing the barrier properties of separation membranes and constructing core-shell organic/inorganic sorbents. Recent achievements and studies on the economic aspects of using LbL assemblies for water purification suggest possible development of economically-viable materials for this application in the future.

Polyelectrolyte Multilayers for Forward Osmosis, Combining the Right Multilayer and Draw Solution

Dennis Maik Reurink et al.

Summary: Polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) are studied as selective separation layers on hollow fiber membranes, with different PSS/PAH and PSS/PEI PEM membranes showing varying separation properties under nanofiltration conditions against different draw solutions. The right combination of PEM membrane and draw solution is crucial for minimizing reverse salt fluxes in forward osmosis. Cross-linking of PEMs results in lower overall salt and water flux, while maintaining reverse salt flux selectivity.

Magnesium-Induced Variation of Polyamide Membrane Behavior for the Treatment of Haloacetic Acids in Swimming Pool Waters

Huihui Zhao et al.

Summary: The co-presence of haloacetic acids (HAAS) and Mg2+ in swimming pool waters can affect membrane performance, with Mg2+ potentially interacting with membranes. The addition of Mg2+ reduced HAAS rejection and water flux in loose NF270 membranes, suggesting binding of Mg2+ to membranes and resulting in changes to membrane surface properties. The interaction between Mg2+ and membranes alters pore size and surface properties, affecting permeability for different solutes and water.
