Secondary organic aerosol formation and source contributions over east China in summertime

Jie Li et al.

Summary: This study reveals that while AVOC dominates SOA formation on average over east China, the contributions of different SOA sources vary considerably in different regions of China. BVOC contributes equally to SOA formation as AVOC in regions with higher forest coverage and BVOC emissions and lower anthropogenic emissions, highlighting the significant role of BVOC in summer SOA formation in China.

Emissions of condensable organic aerosols from stationary combustion sources over Japan

Yu Morino et al.

Summary: Treatment of condensable particulate matter (CPM) is crucial for accurate simulation of atmospheric particulate matter (PM). This study updates the estimation of CPM emissions from stationary combustion sources in Japan by considering the relationship between CPM fraction and filterable PM (FPM) concentrations for individual sources. The findings highlight the importance of accurately estimating the CPM/FPM ratio, particularly for sources with high FPM concentrations, in order to improve CPM emission estimation.

Full-volatility emission framework corrects missing and underestimated secondary organic aerosol sources

Xing Chang et al.

Summary: Organic aerosol (OA) is a significant component of aerosols that have a major impact on human health and global climate. Current models cannot accurately predict OA concentrations and source contributions. A new emission framework has been developed to address this issue and it shows that volatile chemical products, domestic combustion, and biomass open burning are the leading sources of secondary OA (SOA), which were previously underestimated.

Field observational constraints on the controllers in glyoxal (CHOCHO) reactive uptake to aerosol

Dongwook Kim et al.

Summary: Glyoxal (CHOCHO), the simplest dicarbonyl in the troposphere, is a potential precursor for secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and brown carbon (BrC) that affect air quality and climate. Measurements during the KORUS-AQ campaign in 2016 allowed for detailed quantification of CHOCHO loss mechanisms for SOA formation. The production of CHOCHO was mainly from oxidation of aromatics, and its loss to aerosol was the most important removal path.

Primary organic gas emissions from gasoline vehicles in China: Factors, composition and trends

Lijuan Qi et al.

Summary: Continuous tightening emission standards have led to a reduction in organic gas emissions from gasoline vehicles, with VOC emissions being the most effectively controlled subgroup. Along with more stringent emission standards, the mass fraction of VOCs in TOGs decreased while IVOCs increased. Moreover, the study highlights the importance of controlling OVOC emissions and addressing IVOC emissions from LDGVs for future improvement.

Dan Dan Huang et al.

Summary: In this study conducted in Shanghai, collocated OA measurements with AMS and TAG were used to identify primary COA (PCOA) and oxygenated COA (OCOA). Criteria for identifying COA factors from AMS analysis with different oxygenation levels were proposed, and two positive matrix factorization approaches were compared for COA quantification. The study highlights the significant impacts of cooking activities on urban air quality and the advantages of conducting collocated measurements using multiple high time resolution mass spectrometric techniques in advancing our understanding of atmospheric OA chemistry.

Simulation of secondary organic aerosol over the Yangtze River Delta region: The impacts from the emissions of intermediate volatility organic compounds and the SOA modeling framework

Ling Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of IVOC emissions on SOA concentrations in the Yangtze River Delta region of China. Two methods are used to estimate IVOC emissions, which significantly enhance simulated SOA concentrations, with the traditional two-product modeling framework showing an increase of 8%-27% at the monitoring site. Using the 1.5-Dimension Volatility Basis Set (VBS) approach increases simulated SOA by 76% but reduces POA concentration by 72%, leading to an overall decrease in organic aerosol (OA) by 12%.

Summary: Organic aerosol (OA) is a significant component of submicron aerosol in the troposphere, affecting air quality and human health. Anthropogenic sources, particularly in industrial and residential sectors, are found to be the dominant contributors to SOA in China, warranting pollution mitigation measures in the future. Further research and measurements are needed to better understand the sources and impacts of OA.

Secondary organic aerosols from anthropogenic volatile organic compounds contribute substantially to air pollution mortality

Benjamin A. Nault et al.

Summary: The production of ASOA is strongly correlated with the reactivity of specific anthropogenic volatile organic compounds, with differences in ASOA production between cities explained by variations in emissions of aromatics and intermediate- and semi-volatile organic compounds. An improved model estimates that ASOA contributes to 340,000 PM2.5-related premature deaths per year, over an order of magnitude higher than previous studies. However, the extrapolation from cities with detailed studies to regions with larger uncertainties in emissions is a limitation of this study. Further development of institutional air quality management infrastructure and comprehensive air quality campaigns in specific regions are needed for progress in this area.
