Michael Mair et al.

Summary: This study investigates the switching characteristics and flow field modes of an ultrasonically driven bistable fluidic diverter under different conditions. The experiments found that a specific jet mode needs to be excited to promote switching at high Mach numbers.

Fluid Dynamics of a Bistable Diverter Under Ultrasonic Excitation-Part II: Flow Visualization and Fundamental Mechanisms

Michael Mair et al.

Summary: The switching mechanism and flow physics of an actively controlled fluidic device using acoustic excitation to control jet movement are investigated. Acoustic excitation at the preferred frequency results in high saturation amplitudes and the formation of large vortical structures. The change in excitation mode triggering the switching process from a shear layer-based mode to a jet orifice mode with increasing Reynolds number is explained by examining basic flow features, including shear layer instabilities.

Summary: This study investigates the fluid dynamics of a supersonic jet flow using numerical methods, focusing on the interaction between the jet flow and a ball-shaped plug, as well as the switching mechanism of a novel jet valve. The research highlights the importance of high pressure control inlets and initial fluid conditions for the successful operation of the jet valve.

Switching Action of a Bistable Fluidic Amplifier for Ultrasonic Testing

Thorge Schweitzer et al.

Summary: Air-coupled ultrasonic testing is widely used in various industries for non-destructive testing of composite materials, particularly in large concrete structures that may lead to catastrophic failures. A novel fluidic transducer based on a bistable fluidic amplifier is investigated in this study, which has shown to produce high-power broadband ultrasonic signals through its switching action. Parametric CFD simulations were performed to analyze the switching behavior of the fluidic switch, revealing an inversely proportional relationship between flow velocity in the throat and switching time.
