Wayfinding behaviour in a multi-level building: A comparative study of HMD VR and Desktop VR

Yan Feng et al.

Summary: This study compares the adoption of head-mounted display (HMD) VR and desktop VR for studying pedestrian wayfinding behavior, and finds that technological differences significantly impact task performance and head rotation change, while route choice, exit choice, and user experience are overall similar between the two groups.

Development and evaluation of a VR research tool to study wayfinding behaviour in a multi-story building

Yan Feng et al.

Summary: This study introduces a Virtual Reality tool called WayR to investigate pedestrian wayfinding behavior in a multi-story building, and evaluates its validity and usability through a VR experiment consisting of four wayfinding assignments. The results show that participants' behavior in the VR environment matches findings in the literature, and that participants behave significantly differently across wayfinding assignments with increasing complexity. Subjective measures indicate a high degree of realism, immersion, usability, and low level of sickness of WayR.

Underlying Factors and Strategies for Organizational BIM Capabilities: The Case of Iran

Mohammad Sadra Rajabi et al.

Summary: Building information modeling (BIM) plays a significant role in the AECO industries. However, the lack of organizational BIM capabilities has hindered the full realization of BIM benefits. To address this, organizations must develop intuitive strategies to support BIM implementation and maximize the promised benefits.

User Performance in Virtual Reality Environments: The Capability of Immersive Virtual Reality Systems in Enhancing User Spatial Awareness and Producing Consistent Design Results

Sahand Azarby et al.

Summary: This research examined the effectiveness of an Immersive Virtual Reality Interactive Environment (IVRIE) and a desktop-based VR (DT system) in reducing variations in spatial decisions and inconsistent design results. The results showed that IVRIE was more effective than the DT system in promoting consistent space sizes and reducing outliers.

Improving Emergency Training for Earthquakes through Immersive Virtual Environments and Anxiety Tests: A Case Study

Mohammad Sadra Rajabi et al.

Summary: Due to the occurrence of severe and large magnitude earthquakes each year, earthquake-prone countries suffer significant financial damages and loss of life. Teaching essential safety measures will lead to a generation that can perform basic procedures during an earthquake, which is an essential and effective solution in preventing the loss of life in this natural disaster. Virtual Reality (VR) technology has been used as a tool to educate people on safety matters. The study evaluates the effect of education and premonition on the incorrect decision-making of residents under the stressful conditions of an earthquake.

Scale Estimation for Design Decisions in Virtual Environments: Understanding the Impact of User Characteristics on Spatial Perception in Immersive Virtual Reality Systems

Sahand Azarby et al.

Summary: This research explores the impact of user characteristics, such as age, gender, and design knowledge, on spatial decision-making in different virtual environments. By comparing an Immersive Virtual Reality Interactive Environment (IVRIE) with a traditional Virtual Reality system (DT system), the study investigates users' spatial perceptions in different systems. The results show that user characteristics and system features have an influence on spatial decision-making.

Retracing evacuation strategy: A virtual reality game-based investigation into the influence of building's spatial configuration in an emergency

Dajana Snopkova et al.

Summary: Individuals tend to retrace familiar routes rather than follow evacuation signs during evacuations, which can have undesirable or fatal consequences in emergencies. The spatial configuration of buildings plays an important role in influencing retracing behavior and should be carefully considered in building design and agent-based simulations.
