Design and Backdrivability Modeling of a Portable High Torque Robotic Knee Prosthesis With Intrinsic Compliance for Agile Activities

Junxi Zhu et al.

Summary: High-performance prostheses are crucial for lower extremity amputees in order to engage in versatile activities. This article proposes an analytical backdrive torque model and methods for gear transmission design to improve compliance. The developed knee prosthesis shows high backdrive torque, high compliance, and high control accuracy, allowing for agile and high-demanding activities.

Design and Analysis of a Novel Double-Stator Double-Rotor Motor Drive System for In-Wheel Direct Drive of Electric Vehicles

Chunzhen Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel double-stator double-rotor motor with a synthetic-slot structure for in-wheel direct drive of EVs. By placing copper and permanent magnets in the slots of the motor, the mechanical structure is simplified and suitable for in-wheel direct drive. The feasibility of the design is verified through finite element analysis, prototype fabrication, and experimental results.

Design and Preliminary Results of a Reaction Force Series Elastic Actuator for Bionic Knee and Ankle Prostheses

Matthew E. Carney et al.

Summary: This study introduces an actuator designed for lower-extremity powered-prostheses that replicates biological functions of human knees and ankles. The actuator has been demonstrated to achieve required torque, angle, and velocity for walking under various conditions. Initial results show an electric cost of transport of 0.053J/kg when walking at 1.5m/s in an ankle configuration.

Exploring the Limits of a Redundant Actuation System Through Co-Design

Gianluigi Grandesso et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the energy efficiency of a redundant actuation architecture by comparing its energy consumption with other actuators. The results show significant energy savings for sinusoidal movements, but smaller savings for nonsinusoidal movements. Additionally, the study demonstrates that peak hardware performance can be achieved through concurrent design, which is beyond human intuition.

Dual-Motor Planetary Transmission to Improve Efficiency in Electric Vehicles

Giacomo Mantriota et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a dual-motor solution for electric cars, where two smaller motors are coupled via a planetary gear, resulting in a higher overall energy efficiency of about 9% compared to a single-motor power transmission system. The dual-motor architecture ensures that both motors operate in the vicinity of their optimal working range.
