Synergistic Interaction of Piperine and Thymol on Attenuation of the Biofilm Formation, Hyphal Morphogenesis and Phenotypic Switching in Candida albicans

Arumugam Priya et al.

Summary: The incidence of fungal infections has increased due to antifungal resistance. Biofilm formation is a major contributor to infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance. This study investigated antibiofilm and combinatorial approaches to attenuate biofilm formation and virulence factors expression in Candida. Piperine and thymol, bioactive components of pepper and thyme, showed synergistic effects in reducing Candida adherence, hyphal extension, and morphological transformation. Piperine and thymol can be used synergistically for the treatment of biofilm-associated C. albicans infection.

Antifungal activity of amino-alcohols based cationic surfactants and in silico, homology modeling, docking and molecular dynamics studies against lanosterol 14-α-demethylase enzyme

Zakaria Hafidi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that amino-alcohols based cationic surfactants exhibit good antifungal activity against different Candida strains, with minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 0.002 to 0.30 mM. The antifungal activity increased with the hydrophobicity of the inhibitors in the majority of Candida strains tested during the evaluation process.

Surfactants of microbial origin as antibiofilm agents

Katarzyna Paraszkiewicz et al.

Summary: Biosurfactants are universal molecules produced by microorganisms, exhibiting surface properties often accompanied by desired biological activity. Due to their low toxicity and biodegradable nature, biosurfactants are considered environmentally 'friendly' and have potential applications in various industries. Their antibacterial and antifungal activities make them relevant for inhibitory agents against microbial biofilm, with recent advances in research focusing on their role as antibiofilm agents.

Interventional Effect of Nanosilver Paint on Fungal Load of Indoor Air in a Hospital Ward

Nasrin Rostami et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of nanosilver paint on reducing fungal contaminants in hospital ward environments. The results showed that the use of nanosilver paint was effective in reducing air fungal contamination. The study also found that the active sampling method was more sensitive in measuring concentration changes for fungal bioaerosols.

Catechol thwarts virulent dimorphism in Candida albicans and potentiates the antifungal efficacy of azoles and polyenes

Jothi Ravi et al.

Summary: This study focused on exploring the antivirulence effects of catechol, a plant allelochemical, on Candida albicans. Catechol at sub-MIC concentrations showed dose-dependent inhibition of biofilm and hyphal formation, as well as inhibition of virulence enzymes. Additionally, catechol enhanced the fungicidal efficacy of certain antifungal agents.

Biofilm eradication and antifungal mechanism of action against Candida albicans of cationic dicephalic surfactants with a labile linker

Emil Paluch et al.

Summary: Research on the antifungal mechanism of cationic dicephalic surfactants on Candida albicans showed that their action is different from most known surfactants, inducing oxidative stress and increasing cell membrane permeability without compromising its integrity. These findings significantly expand the understanding of multifunctional cationic surfactants and suggest their potential applications as antibiofilm agents in medicine or industry.
