Simultaneous removal of heavy metals and bioelectricity generation in microbial fuel cell coupled with constructed wetland: an optimization study on substrate and plant types

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: The study successfully removed heavy metals (Zn and Ni) from sludge using a microbial fuel cell coupled with constructed wetland (CW-MFC), while also generating electricity. It was found that the CW-MFC system with a construction of GAC and water hyacinth showed the best performance in heavy metal treatment.

Performance optimization and microbial community evaluation for domestic wastewater treatment in a constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell

Houyun Yang et al.

Summary: Constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell system (CW-MFC) is an effective technology for domestic wastewater treatment and bioelectricity generation. This study investigated the influence of influent COD concentration, HRT, and external resistance on system performance and found the optimal operating conditions. The results showed that CW-MFC outperformed traditional CW system in terms of pollutant removal efficiency and bioelectricity production. The analysis of microbial community indicated that the enrichment of electroactive bacteria and denitrifying bacteria might contribute to the performance improvement of CW-MFC system.

Methanogenesis inhibitors used in bio-electrochemical systems: A review revealing reality to decide future direction and applications

Dibyojyoty Nath et al.

Summary: Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a technology that utilizes mixed microbiota to treat wastewater and produce electricity, but the presence of methanogens can affect electricity generation. Research has shown that methanogens have the cellular machinery for extracellular electron transfer, making them a focus for future studies on their impact and inhibition techniques in MFCs.

Building efficient biocathodes with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans for the high current generation

Ganesan Sathiyanarayanan et al.

Summary: The study successfully developed biocathodes based on iron-oxidizing bacterium Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans under specific conditions to achieve high current density. The oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ by A. ferrooxidans and the formation of a multi-layer biofilm on the cathode surface played crucial roles in high current generation.
