Subthalamic deep brain stimulation of an anatomically detailed model of the human hyperdirect pathway

Clayton S. Bingham et al.

Summary: This study used biophysical models to investigate the recruitment pathways and conduction latencies of the hyperdirect pathway (HDP) in response to subthalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS). The results suggest that HDP activation is influenced by complex axonal branching in the subthalamic nucleus (STN). These findings provide valuable information for linking HDP activation with evoked potentials (EPs) recorded in clinical experiments.

Effects of diffusion signal modeling and segmentation approaches on subthalamic nucleus parcellation

Demetrio Milardi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to test the effects of different tractography-based approaches for the reconstruction of subthalamic nucleus (STN) functional territories. Four parcellation pipelines were compared, and it was found that each parcellation provided consistent results in terms of location of the identified parcels, but with variations in size and shape. It is suggested that fine-tuning of tractography-based parcellation may lead to higher reproducibility and aid the development of an optimized surgical targeting protocol.

Hyperdirect connectivity of opercular speech network to the subthalamic nucleus

Ahmed Jorge et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence for the involvement of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in speech production and highlights the unique connections between the inferior frontal gyms and the STN. The findings suggest that these connections may be specific to humans and have evolved alongside the development of speech.

The Stereological Analysis and Spatial Distribution of Neurons in the Human Subthalamic Nucleus

Ema Bokulic et al.

Summary: In this study, the expression pattern of 8 neuronal markers in the adult human STN was examined, and the neuronal subpopulations were found to vary in density within the nucleus. The highest density of STN neurons was observed along the ventromedial border, gradually decreasing towards the dorsolateral border.

A theoretical framework for the site-specific and frequency-dependent neuronal effects of deep brain stimulation

Luka Milosevic et al.

Summary: This study investigates the brain-region-specific and frequency-dependent effects of deep brain stimulation on neuronal activity. The results show that higher stimulation frequencies lead to neuronal suppression, while site-specific responses are influenced by local neuroanatomical properties and short-term synaptic plasticity.

Image-based biophysical modeling predicts cortical potentials evoked with subthalamic deep brain stimulation

Bryan Howell et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of patient-specific estimates of neural pathway activations in the subthalamic region using connectomic modeling of subthalamic DBS. Results showed that good model performance required accurate lead localization, image fusions, and appropriate selection of fiber diameter in the biophysical model. The findings demonstrated that connectomic models of DBS with sufficient anatomical and electrical details can predict recruitment dynamics of white matter, aiding in defining standards for surgical targeting and patient programming applications.
