Robustness of the thermal Hall effect close to half-quantization in α-RuCl3

J. A. N. Bruin et al.

Summary: A fractionalized excitation is observed in quantum spin liquids, providing a way to observe the quantum spin liquid state. The thermal Hall conductivity in alpha-RuCl3 exhibits approximately half-integer quantization, especially in a plateau-like parameter regime for high magnetic fields and low temperatures. Cooling to low temperatures suppresses the thermal Hall conductivity.

Thermodynamic evidence for a field-angle-dependent Majorana gap in a Kitaev spin liquid

O. Tanaka et al.

Summary: By measuring the heat capacity of alpha-RuCl3 under different magnetic field directions, this study reveals strongly angle-dependent low-energy excitations in the material. These findings are consistent with the characteristics of itinerant Majorana fermions in the Kitaev model. Furthermore, the changes in edge transport correspond to the opening and closing of the bulk gap according to the magnetic field direction, and the absence of the quantum thermal Hall effect at higher magnetic fields suggests a nematic quantum spin liquid state with two-fold rotational symmetry.

Evidence for a Phase Transition in the Quantum Spin Liquid State of a Kitaev Candidate α-RuCl3

Shota Suetsugu et al.

Summary: Researchers have found that the Kitaev quantum spin liquid on the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice undergoes a phase transition at intense magnetic fields, which may be a weak first-order transition. This transition affects the thermal Hall conductance of the topological state.

Berry phases of vison transport in Z2 topologically ordered states from exact fermion-flux lattice dualities

Chuan Chen et al.

Summary: We have developed an exact mapping method that can map all states and operators from two-dimensional lattices of spins-1/2 into lattices of fermions and bosons with mutual semionic statistical interaction. This mapping does not rely on imposing local conservation laws and captures the motion of charges and fluxes equally. Through this mapping, we are able to compute the Berry phases for the transport of fluxes in a class of symmetry-enriched topologically ordered states with emergent Z2 gauge fields, and determine the conditions under which the Majorana-carrying flux excitation acquires a specific phase when moving around a single plaquette.

Heart of Entanglement: Chiral, Nematic, and Incommensurate Phases in the Kitaev-Gamma Ladder in a Field

Erik S. Sorensen et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the Kitaev-Gamma ladder model to explore the phase space of disordered states potentially becoming spin liquids in the two-dimensional limit. The research reveals a rich phase diagram with 15 distinct phases emerging due to the competition between interactions and magnetic field, including a highly entangled phase with staggered chirality. By comparing results with a C-3 symmetric cluster of the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice, insights into possible spin liquids in the two-dimensional limit are provided.

Oscillations of the thermal conductivity in the spin-liquid state of α-RuCl3

Peter Czajka et al.

Summary: Magnetic spin liquids cannot achieve magnetic order even at millikelvin temperatures due to conflicting constraints on each spin, leading to intense interest in the resulting quantum spin-liquid state with unusual excitations; Observations of oscillations in the thermal conductivity of alpha-RuCl3 in a specific magnetic field range reveal periodic behavior, closely related to the temperature-induced exponential decrease in oscillation amplitude and emergence of anomalous planar thermal Hall conductivity above approximately 2 K.

Half-integer quantized anomalous thermal Hall effect in the Kitaev material candidate α-RuCl3

T. Yokoi et al.

Summary: Recent reports have shown the presence of half-integer thermal quantum Hall conductance in the two-dimensional honeycomb material alpha-RuCl3, even in magnetic fields without out-of-plane components. The measured field-angular variation of the quantized thermal Hall conductance in alpha-RuCl3 has the same sign structure as the topological Chern number of the pure Kitaev spin liquid, indicating that the non-Abelian topological order persists in the presence of non-Kitaev interactions.

Proximate ferromagnetic state in the Kitaev model material α-RuCl3

H. Suzuki et al.

Summary: The study on alpha-RuCl3 reveals that its candidate status as a quantum spin liquid is compromised by the presence of zigzag antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures, which is destabilized by quantum fluctuations and ultimately leads to a ferromagnetic ground state. The competition among these three states, including ferromagnetism and the Kitaev spin liquid, is crucial for understanding the unusual properties of alpha-RuCl3 in magnetic fields.

Variational study of the Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model

Shang-Shun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study computes the low-energy excitation spectrum and dynamical structure of the Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model, revealing the physical reasons for the asymmetric stability of Kitaev spin liquid phases and the formation of bound states by fractionalized excitations in specific regions. The condensation of these bound states drives certain phase transitions induced by Heisenberg and Gamma interactions, providing a simple explanation for the magnetically ordered phases surrounding each Kitaev spin liquid phase.

Theory of weak symmetry breaking of translations in Z2 topologically ordered states and its relation to topological superconductivity from an exact lattice Z2 charge-flux attachment

Peng Rao et al.

Summary: This study explores Z(2) topologically ordered states enriched by translational symmetry using a novel bosonization approach, demonstrating the occurrence of weak symmetry breaking when fermionic spinons form a weak topological superconductor. The research also delves into peculiar features such as ground-state degeneracy and dangling boundary Majorana modes in certain Z(2) topologically ordered states. Additionally, the extension of Z(2) charge-flux attachment to open lattices and cylinders leads to the construction of exact solvable models describing dispersive Majorana gapless boundary modes. The stability of the Z x (Z(2))3 classification of 2D BdG Hamiltonians enriched by translational symmetry against interactions and self-averaging disorder is also discussed.

Anatomy of Z2 fluxes in anyon Fermi liquids and Bose condensates

Oscar Pozo et al.

Summary: In this study, we examined the properties of pi fluxes embedded in states with a finite density of anyons forming either a Fermi liquid or a Bose-Einstein condensate. The pi flux is a fully deconfined quasiparticle in a Fermi liquid, while it becomes a marginally confined excitation in a Bose-Einstein condensate. The pi flux exhibits distinct behavior and characteristics in these two different types of states.
