Plant- and microbe-assisted biochar amendment technology for petroleum hydrocarbon remediation in saline-sodic soils: A review

Kudakwashe Meki et al.

Summary: Soil degradation through salinization and pollution by toxic compounds is a significant threat to coastal wetlands. Bioremediation using plants, biochar, and microbes is a cost-effective option for remediation. Biochar enhances plant/microbe growth and can effectively remediate petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) in salinized soils. Plant-microbe interactions mediated rhizodegradation and microbial respiration is more active in biochar amendments. The use of biochar, plants, and microbes is recommended for sustainable and practical remediation of PHCs and salinization.

Remediation of soil polluted with petroleum hydrocarbons and its reuse for agriculture: Recent progress, challenges, and perspectives

Teklit Gebregiorgis Ambaye et al.

Summary: Petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) are commonly used in various industries, but excessive amounts of PHs can contaminate soil and pose a threat to living organisms. Traditional chemical treatment methods for soil remediation are expensive, environmentally unfriendly, and inefficient. This review discusses the sources, properties, distribution, and fate of PHs in the environment, as well as factors affecting soil remediation and restoration. The review highlights the use of bioremediation and next-generation sequencing technologies for monitoring contaminated sites, and also suggests the potential of nanotechnology for effective soil remediation.

Impact of drilling waste pollution on land cover in a high subarctic forest-tundra zone

Anatoly Opekunov et al.

Summary: Global climate changes can lead to the destruction of permafrost and the transfer of pollutants to water sources. This study found that drill cuttings discharge resulted in chemical pollution, affecting soil and vegetation.

Simultaneous Use of Mass Transfer and Thermodynamics Equations to Estimate the Amount of Removed Greenhouse Gas from the Environment by a Stream of Water

Farshad Farahbod

Summary: The research aims to develop a novel mathematical model to simulate pollutant emissions, with findings showing an increase in greenhouse gas emissions with higher water flow rates and ambient temperatures. The results also suggest a good agreement between the model data and experimental data, indicating the possibility of estimating gas solubility in water flow using mass transfer and thermodynamic equations.

Investigation of heat transfer equations for evaluation of drinkable water production rate as an efficiency of closed solar desalination pond

Farshad Farahbod

Summary: The research aimed to calculate the efficiency of a solar desalination pond for freshwater production and validate results through experimental measurements. The maximum deviation between theoretical and experimental condensation rates was found to be around 4.93%, indicating the mathematical equation could accurately predict the efficiency of solar desalination pond.
