Size-dependent aerosol iron solubility in an urban atmosphere

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the size distribution and solubility of aerosol iron in Hangzhou were investigated. The results showed that the concentration and solubility of iron in aerosol particles were dependent on their size and sources.

Oxidative Stress, Cytotoxic and Inflammatory Effects of Urban Ultrafine Road-Deposited Dust from the UK and Mexico in Human Epithelial Lung (Calu-3) Cells

Jessica Hammond et al.

Summary: This study exposed human lung epithelial cells to ultrafine particles from road dust in different cities and found differential oxidative, cytotoxic, and inflammatory responses. The metal components and cytotoxicity of road dust varied among different cities. Mass-based limits for particulate matter seem inappropriate for road dust in specific locations.

The influence of chemical composition, aerosol acidity, and metal dissolution on the oxidative potential of fine particulate matter and redox potential of the lung lining fluid

Pourya Shahpoury et al.

Summary: This study quantified the oxidative potential of PM2.5 from several Canadian cities and evaluated the application of empirical oxidative potential as a new metric for aerosol. The oxidative potential was strongly correlated with different emission source sectors, showing the highest levels from traffic emissions. Copper showed a high association with oxidative potential across all sites, while other metals' correlation depended on the emission sources. The solubility of iron was associated with sulfate and aerosol pH at most sites, with implications for the health effects of PM2.5.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of technogenic magnetic particles (TMPs) produced during various industrial processes, indicating that their magnetic parameters can effectively differentiate pollution sources and serve as indicators of historical contamination. The research provides valuable insights for studying environmental impacts of iron metallurgy, steel production, and iron mining activities.

Ocean fertilization by pyrogenic aerosol iron

Akinori Ito et al.

Summary: Aerosols supply bioaccessible iron to marine biota, impacting climate through biogeochemical feedbacks. Research shows that pyrogenic aerosol iron has higher solubility than lithogenic aerosol, with a significant contribution to atmospheric supply of dissolved iron to the ocean. Models suggest pyrogenic iron enhances marine productivity more efficiently than lithogenic sources, but quantifying its impact on marine biogeochemical cycles under changing air quality and climate remains challenging.

Less atmospheric radiative heating by dust due to the synergy of coarser size and aspherical shape

Akinori Ito et al.

Summary: Mineral dust aerosols impact the atmosphere by scattering and absorbing solar and thermal radiation, leading to cooling and warming effects. However, uncertainties in dust radiative effects persist due to differences in dust size distribution and optical properties simulated in Earth system models. Adjusting dust properties in simulations can lead to changes in global aerosol optical depth and radiative cooling effects.

Aging of atmospheric aerosols and the role of iron in catalyzing brown carbon formation

Hind A. Al-Abadleh

Summary: Extensive research has been conducted on the processes leading to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and brown carbon (BrC), as well as the role of iron chemistry in these processes. The efficiency of iron chemistry in forming BrC from organic precursors under various atmospheric conditions is highlighted, calling for further studies on the impacts of these pathways on aerosol chemistry and climate.
