Scale-up of hydrothermal processing: Liquid hot water and pilot-scale tubular steam explosion batch reactor for bioethanol production using biomass

K. D. Gonzalez-Gloria et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal processes were used to treat Sargassum spp. biomass under different conditions, achieving a conversion yield of 99.91%. The enzymatic hydrolysis was scaled up in a stirred bioreactor, resulting in a saccharification yield of 95.92%. The simultaneous saccharification and fermentation strategy yielded ethanol yields of 57.69% in a continuous stirred tank bioreactor and 71.37% in a bubble column reactor. The bioreactor enzymatic hydrolysis process showed the best energy efficiency at 30.19 (gsugar/MJ). This study establishes the conditions for a third-generation biorefinery using Sargassum biomass in a circular bioeconomy.

Insights into Algal Polysaccharides: A Review of Their Structure, Depolymerases, and Metabolic Pathways

Jin Li et al.

Summary: In recent years, marine macroalgae have gained attention from researchers worldwide due to their extensive biomass. The polysaccharides found in these algae have been widely studied in the fields of food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics due to their various bioactivities. However, there are many barriers to their application, such as their large molecular size, poor solubility, and low physiological activities. This review focuses on the structure, hydrolase families, metabolic pathways, and potential applications of seven macroalgae polysaccharides, aiming to enhance our understanding of their structure and metabolic pathways and facilitate the utilization of bioactive oligosaccharides.

Production of acetone, butanol, and ethanol by fermentation of Saccharina latissima: Cultivation, enzymatic hydrolysis, inhibitor removal, and fermentation

A. Schultze-Jena et al.

Summary: Sustainably produced seaweed has great potential as a source of fuels, chemicals, and food, without competing with terrestrial food production. Through a biorefinery approach, seaweed biomass can be transformed into suitable substrates for fermentation, resulting in the production of acetone, butanol, and ethanol. This study describes the entire process of biofuel production from seaweed, starting from cultivation and harvest to fermentation.

High-pressure technology for Sargassum spp biomass pretreatment and fractionation in the third generation of bioethanol production

E. Aparicio et al.

Summary: Sargassum spp biomass was subjected to high-pressure technology for biomass fractionation to obtain glucan enriched pretreated solids, which were then further hydrolyzed with enzymes to produce glucose with high conversion yields. A pre-simultaneous saccharification and fermentation strategy was used to produce bioethanol from the glucose, demonstrating the feasibility of bioethanol production from macroalgal biomass.
