Metabolic obesity and the risk of knee osteoarthritis progression in elderly community residents: A 3-year longitudinal cohort study

Dong Jin Go et al.

Summary: This study aimed to elucidate the association between metabolic obesity and adverse structural changes of knee OA assessed by MRI. The results showed that in this cohort, the metabolic effects of obesity on knee cartilage damage and BML were not demonstrated, suggesting further large-scale studies are needed to prove the causal relationship between metabolic obesity and knee OA.

Obese and overweight individuals have greater knee synovial inflammation and associated structural and cartilage compositional degeneration: data from the osteoarthritis initiative

Thanat Kanthawang et al.

Summary: Being overweight or obese was significantly associated with a greater prevalence and severity of synovial inflammation imaging biomarkers. The synovial inflammation imaging biomarkers showed positive associations with average T(2) values, WORMS maximum scores, and total WOMAC pain scores. The kappa values for imaging biomarkers showed high reproducibility among readers.
