Using a new local high resolution daily gridded dataset for Attica to statistically downscale climate projections

Konstantinos V. Varotsos et al.

Summary: This study presents a methodological framework for obtaining statistically downscaled high resolution climate projections over the Attica region in Greece. The framework involves the construction of a local daily gridded dataset for temperature variables and daily precipitation sums, which is then used to statistically downscale Regional Climate Model simulations. The results highlight the importance of bias adjustment methods in accurately simulating climate change signals.

Understanding fire regimes in Europe

Luiz Felipe Galizia et al.

Summary: The study revealed that European pyrogeography is influenced by vegetation and anthropogenic factors, with four pyroregions showing different levels of stability and correlations at interannual scales. There are distinct patterns of correlations between climate and burned area, fire frequency, and fire period length in fire-prone regions, while non-fire-prone regions show weaker correlations. Cool-season fires and large fires in fire-prone regions are related to fuel accumulation.

Performances of climatic indicators from seasonal forecasts for ecosystem management: The case of Central Europe and the Mediterranean

J. M. Costa-Saura et al.

Summary: Climate change affects key meteorological variables, and seasonal forecasts can help anticipate climate risks. This study evaluates the performance of seasonal forecasts for Central Europe and the Mediterranean in predicting indicators for agriculture and forestry. The results highlight the potential usefulness of seasonal forecasts and suggest that different bias correction techniques may affect accuracy.

Temperature and precipitation seasonal forecasts over the Mediterranean region: added value compared to simple forecasting methods

Filippo Cali Quaglia et al.

Summary: This study compared a range of seasonal forecasting systems in predicting temperature and precipitation anomalies over the Mediterranean region, finding that temperature anomalies are better predicted than precipitation anomalies. The Multi-Model Ensemble showed the best performance in predicting precipitation anomalies, while persistence-based methods performed best for temperature anomalies.

A simplified seasonal forecasting strategy, applied to wind and solar power in Europe

Philip E. Bett et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the skill of seasonal forecasts of wind speed and solar irradiance in Europe and proposes a simple method for producing calibrated probabilistic seasonal forecasts. The use of larger-scale climate predictors can improve the skill in some cases. The study also shows that wind and solar power generation at seasonal and regional scales are highly correlated with single climate variables.

Evaluating ERA-Interim, Agri4Cast, and E-OBS gridded products in reproducing spatiotemporal characteristics of precipitation and drought over a data poor region: The Case of Greece

Theodoros Mavromatis et al.

Summary: Gridded climate datasets are essential for weather and climate research. This study evaluated the performance of three different datasets in simulating precipitation and drought characteristics in 20 wine production regions in Greece. Results showed that E-OBS and Agri4Cast performed well, with strengths and weaknesses depending on season and specific rainfall characteristics.

Forecasting water temperature in lakes and reservoirs using seasonal climate prediction

Daniel Mercado-Bettin et al.

Summary: Seasonal climate forecasts provide probabilistic predictions of meteorological variables for future months. Integrating these forecasts with hydrologic and lake models can generate seasonal forecasts of discharge and water temperature. While seasonal forecasts for discharge show some skill, forecasts for water temperature perform better in natural lakes compared to reservoirs, suggesting human water control and water depth can impact predictability. Further investigation is needed to determine the role of lead-in conditions in skillful water temperature predictions.

Investigating the Climate-Related Risk of Forest Fires for Mediterranean Islands' Blue Economy

Valentina Bacciu et al.

Summary: The study aims to evaluate the vulnerability and risk of forest fires on seven Mediterranean islands under climate change, highlighting islands with high potential for improvement in adapting capacity and emphasizing the main environmental and socio-economic elements affecting vulnerability and risk. The approach integrates quantitative and qualitative data with a participatory approach involving stakeholders and experts, discussing the potentials and constraints of the method in identifying priorities for mitigation and adaptation policies at the island level.

Bias-corrected and spatially disaggregated seasonal forecasts: a long-term reference forecast product for the water sector in semi-arid regions

Christof Lorenz et al.

Summary: Seasonal forecasts have the potential to improve water management in water-scarce regions, but global forecasts are often limited by low spatial resolution, model biases, and drifts. This study uses a bias-correction and spatial-disaggregation approach to improve the accuracy of seasonal forecasts, particularly in semi-arid regions, by enhancing spatial resolution and reducing biases. The corrected forecasts cover multiple regions and variables for an extended period, providing valuable information for disaster preparedness and climate-proofing of regional water management.
