The Quick and the Careless: The Construct Validity of Page Time as a Measure of Insufficient Effort Responding to Surveys

Nathan A. Bowling et al.

Summary: This paper describes the potential merits of the page time index and examines its construct validity through three studies. The findings suggest that page time is highly correlated with other IER indices, sensitive to experimental manipulations, and predictive of participants' inability to recognize item content.

A Response-Time-Based Latent Response Mixture Model for Identifying and Modeling Careless and Insufficient Effort Responding in Survey Data

Esther Ulitzsch et al.

Summary: Careless and insufficient effort responding (C/IER) poses a threat to data quality and validity of inferences drawn from questionnaire data. A model-based approach is presented to detect various manifestations of C/IER by utilizing response time information and theoretical considerations. The approach considers individual differences in response behavior, allows for variations in attentiveness, and deals with different response patterns arising from C/IER.

Detecting Careless Responding in Survey Data Using Stochastic Gradient Boosting

Ulrich Schroeders et al.

Summary: This study examines the bias of careless responding in survey responses, which poses a threat to the reliability and validity of psychological measurements. The introduction of gradient boosted trees as a machine learning technique to identify careless respondents outperformed traditional detection mechanisms in simulated studies, but this advantage did not translate to empirical studies. Existing detection methods may not be robust enough to handle the erratic nature of responses in real-world settings, prompting further research in the field.

Will the Questions Ever End? Person-Level Increases in Careless Responding During Questionnaire Completion

Nathan A. Bowling et al.

Summary: The results of the studies showed that participants tended to respond more carelessly as they progressed further into the questionnaire; participants who were warned that carelessness would be punished displayed smaller increases in carelessness; increases in carelessness were greater within an unproctored online study compared to a proctored laboratory study.

Insufficient Effort Responding as a Potential Confound between Survey Measures and Objective Tests

Jason L. Huang et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of insufficient effort responding (IER) on survey measures and objective tests, finding that IER can act as a confounding factor between tests and surveys. It shows that within-person consistency of IER and the percentage of IER cases in the sample can influence the confounding effects of IER. The research discusses implications for survey and test design and evaluation.
