Deep groundwater recharge mechanism in the sedimentary and crystalline terrains of Sri Lanka: A study based on environmental isotope and chemical signatures

K. S. G. S. Priyadarshanee et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics and chemical properties of groundwater in different terrains in Sri Lanka using isotope and geochemical approaches. The results show that groundwater chemistry is mainly influenced by cation exchange or rock water interaction. Groundwater in sedimentary terrains is mainly recharged by rainfall, while groundwater in crystalline terrains is mixed with surface water. Additionally, thermal and non-thermal waters, although originating from the same recharge source, have different flow paths and chemical characteristics.

Groundwater-Based Drinking Water Supply in Sri Lanka: Status and Perspectives

Suresh Indika et al.

Summary: This paper reviews and discusses the current status, challenges, and opportunities of groundwater quality management and improvement in Sri Lanka. Groundwater is the main source of drinking water in Sri Lanka, with different types in different regions. Higher levels of hardness, fluoride, DOC, alkalinity, and salinity are reported in the dry zone due to geology and arid climate. While some regions have significant levels of harmful substances in groundwater, the majority remain within acceptable levels. To achieve safe drinking water supply, Sri Lanka needs to invest in infrastructure and human resources for regular monitoring and assessment of groundwater quality.

Characterization of humic substances isolated from a tropical zone and their role in membrane fouling

M. A. C. K. Hansima et al.

Summary: Humic substances (HS) are heterogeneous organic polymers that show monotonous properties. Due to their high organic content in groundwater, they can cause fouling of EDR ion exchange membranes. The fouling mechanisms of humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) were compared, and it was found that HA fouling is irreversible compared to FA fouling. Understanding these subtle differences can help implement appropriate pretreatments to ensure the durability of EDR membranes.

Hydrogeochemical investigations to assess groundwater and saline water interaction in coastal aquifers of the southeast coast, Tamil Nadu, India

Prakash Raja et al.

Summary: Groundwater and saline water interaction is a common process that alters the quality of aquifer waters, as shown in the study in southeast coastal Tamil Nadu. Hydrogeochemical analysis revealed different groundwater types, such as fresh groundwater, mixed water, and saline water, at different locations, highlighting the impact of tidal variation and proximity to the coast on water quality.

Evaluation of Performance of Existing RO Drinking Water Stations in the North Central Province, Sri Lanka

Suresh Indika et al.

Summary: The study found that RO drinking water stations established by community-based organizations in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka have high salt rejection rates and effectively remove hardness, alkalinity, and various ions. However, challenges such as low recovery rates, low fluoride levels in product water, and membrane fouling were identified, with lack of knowledge and training being major issues that could impact the lifespan of RO systems.

M. A. C. K. Hansima et al.

Summary: Electrodialysis self-reversal (EDR) technology is important for water treatment in domestic and industrial uses, but the impact of natural organic matter and metal ions on ion exchange membrane fouling is not fully understood. Current research focuses on identifying IEM fouling routes, discussing various fouling mechanisms, and evaluating the effectiveness of self-cleaning mechanisms.

Coupling stable isotopes to evaluate sources and transformations of nitrate in groundwater and inflowing rivers around the Caohai karst wetland, Southwest China

Xingxing Cao et al.

Summary: Nitrate is a common pollutant in aquatic ecosystems, especially in vulnerable karst aquifers. In Caohai Lake, nitrate from karst surface water and groundwater flows into the wetland, degrading water quality. The study analyzed nitrate concentrations, hydrochemistry, and stable isotopes to identify sources and fate of nitrate in the groundwater and rivers around the wetland. The results showed that nitrate concentrations in groundwater were higher in the south during the wet season, indicating the main sources were sewage and manure. Efforts to strengthen fertilizer use and sewage treatment are needed to protect groundwater quality and control nitrate levels in rivers.
