Cytokine profiles and the dynamic of gingivitis development in humans

Fabio R. M. Leite et al.

Summary: The study found that fast gingivitis development was associated with higher levels of non-organized response and lower levels of organized response, while slow responders were not associated with gingivitis. The results suggest that individual variability may play a role in susceptibility to gingivitis.

ImmunoDisk-A Fully Automated Bead-Based Immunoassay Cartridge with All Reagents Pre-Stored

Benita Johannsen et al.

Summary: In this paper, the authors present a fully automated sample-to-answer centrifugal microfluidic cartridge that integrates a wash-free bead-based immunoassay. The system allows for simple fluidic structure and quick detection of C-reactive protein. The authors also investigate the air drying process for protein-coupled beads and propose a drying protocol. The results show that the system has good reproducibility and stability. The authors encourage further testing and implementation of this system in clinical studies and diagnostic applications.

aMMP-8 Oral Fluid PoC Test in Relation to Oral and Systemic Diseases

Timo Sorsa et al.

Summary: The manuscript highlights the benefits of active-matrix metalloproteinase-8 (aMMP-8) chairside/point-of-care diagnostic tools in oral and systemic diseases. Previous studies support aMMP-8 as a more precise biomarker compared to other markers. The lateral flow aMMP-8 point-of-care testing shows comparable results to protease activity assays and can be applied in various medical fields.

Metatranscriptomic analyses of the oral microbiome

Ana E. Duran-Pinedo

Summary: The oral microbiome composition and gene-expression profiles play crucial roles in disease development, especially in periodontal disease and caries. The functional activities of different species within the subgingival microbiota are interconnected, and efforts are being made to identify changes associated with transitions between health and disease.

Did Omics change periodontal therapy?

Magda Feres et al.

Summary: Studies using next-generation sequencing techniques to evaluate the periodontal microbiome have revealed insights into classic periodontal pathogens, as well as the discovery of new species/genera. Additionally, species and genera associated with periodontal health were found to increase in levels in healthy individuals and post-therapy. While OMICS knowledge has not yet influenced daily clinical practice, it opens up new possibilities for future research in personalized periodontal treatments.

Probing periodontal microbial dark matter using metataxonomics and metagenomics

Purnima S. Kumar et al.

Summary: The study of the periodontal microbial community has been influenced by a long history of cultivation-based and microscopic investigations, leading to the recognition of a discrepancy between culturable and uncultured bacteria. The development of DNA sequencing as a tool to study microbial dark matter has revolutionized the field, enabling the discovery of new species and functions and challenging traditional views on the role of the oral microbiome in health and disease.

Microbial signatures of health, gingivitis, and periodontitis

Loreto Abusleme et al.

Summary: The subgingival crevice contains diverse microbial communities that undergo shifts with the development of gingivitis and periodontitis, showing specific associations between gingival tissue status and subgingival microbiome. Despite methodological differences, distinct community structures were found for health, gingivitis, and periodontitis, suggesting a continuum between gingivitis and periodontitis.

Validation and verification of predictive salivary biomarkers for oral health

Nagihan Bostanci et al.

Summary: The study found that combining multiple biomarker assays provides higher predictive accuracy for gingivitis and periodontitis compared to using single biomarkers, with over 90% accuracy for distinguishing between gingivitis and healthy groups, and 100% accuracy for distinguishing between periodontitis and healthy or gingivitis groups. Additionally, the ratios of biomarkers MMP-8, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 were found to be powerful differentiating values compared to single biomarkers.
