The Role of D-allulose and Erythritol on the Activity of the Gut Sweet Taste Receptor and Gastrointestinal Satiation Hormone Release in Humans: A Randomized, Controlled Trial

Fabienne Teysseire et al.

Summary: This study investigated the importance of the gut sweet taste receptor (T1R2/T1R3) for the release of satiation hormones in response to D-allulose and erythritol. The results showed that D-allulose and erythritol stimulate the secretion of gastrointestinal satiation hormones in humans, and this effect is not mediated via T1R2/T1R3 in the gut. Additionally, erythritol delays gastric emptying and increases feelings of fullness.

The role of sugar-sweetened beverages in the global epidemics of obesity and chronic diseases

Vasanti S. Malik et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that habitual consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with an increased risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Global efforts are needed to reduce the intake of these beverages and alleviate the burden of obesity and chronic diseases.

Gastric emptying of solutions containing the natural sweetener erythritol and effects on gut hormone secretion in humans: A pilot dose-ranging study

Bettina K. Wolnerhanssen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated a dose-dependent effect of the natural sweetener erythritol in stimulating gut hormone release and slowing gastric emptying. There was no impact on blood glucose, insulin, or other blood markers, and all doses were well tolerated.

Effects of D-allulose on glucose tolerance and insulin response to a standard oral sucrose load: results of a prospective, randomized, crossover study

Francesco Franchi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that D-allulose can lead to dose-dependent reductions in plasma glucose and insulin levels, as well as decreased postprandial glucose and insulin excursion in individuals without diabetes. These findings set a foundation for future large-scale investigations into the anti-diabetes effects of D-allulose.

Obesity and Sex-Related Associations With Differential Effects of Sucralose vs Sucrose on Appetite and Reward Processing A Randomized Crossover Trial

Alexandra G. Yunker et al.

Summary: This study investigated the neural and metabolic responses to sucralose vs sucrose consumption among healthy young adults, with a focus on the effects of BMI status and sex on these responses. The results suggest that female individuals and those with obesity may exhibit distinct neural responses to sucralose compared with sucrose consumption, highlighting potential differences in appetite regulation between different sweeteners.

Effects of Oro-Sensory Exposure on Satiation and Underlying Neurophysiological Mechanisms-What Do We Know So Far?

Marlou P. Lasschuijt et al.

Summary: Oro-sensory exposure from the mouth affects satiation and food intake, with longer exposure leading to earlier satiation. Foods with intense taste induce earlier satiation compared to equally palatable foods. Oro-sensory exposure influences satiety by signaling to brain regions involved in taste and reward.

Suitability of sugar alcohols as antidiabetic supplements: A review

Nontokozo Z. Msomi et al.

Summary: The use of sugar alcohols as sugar substitutes in diabetic diet can help maintain optimal control of blood glucose level, but caution should be taken regarding the dosage to avoid potential side effects, in accordance with relevant Food & Drug Administration guidelines. Future studies should focus on exploring the possible toxicity and side effects associated with the consumption of sugar alcohols to ensure their safety.

Neuroendocrine Peptides of the Gut and Their Role in the Regulation of Food Intake

Martha A. Schalla et al.

Summary: The regulation of food intake is a complex interplay between the gut and the brain, with various peptides released by specialized enteroendocrine cells along the gastrointestinal tract communicating the metabolic state to specific nuclei in the hindbrain and the hypothalamus. The seven key peptides involved in this regulation are ghrelin, nesfatin-1, CCK, GLP-1, oxyntomodulin, PYY, and UGN.
