Variability of Reproduction Pathways in the Central-European Populations of Hawthorns with Emphasis on Triploids

Vladislav Kolarcik et al.

Summary: This study investigated the reproduction pathways in mixed-cytotype populations of Crataegus in eastern Slovakia. It found that diploid and polyploid hawthorns have successful reproduction and produce high numbers of seeds, while almost sterile triploids are an exception. Diploids reproduce sexually, while polyploids shift to asexual reproduction, with pseudogamy being essential for regular seed development.

Taxonomic assessment of Sorbus subgenus Aria in the Male Karpaty Mountains

Jiri Velebil et al.

Summary: In this paper, a taxonomic assessment of Sorbus subgen. Aria in the Mal?? Karpaty Mts is presented. The study uses various methods such as field observations, morphological comparison, herbarium revisions, morphometric analyses, flow cytometry, and molecular analyses to assess the taxonomic diversity within this group. The findings reveal the presence of diploids, triploids, and tetraploids, with significant morphological and genetic variability among the diploids. The study also identifies a new species, S. petraea, and reports the occurrence of S. collina in Slovakia for the first time.

Ancient Origin of Two 5S rDNA Families Dominating in the Genus Rosa and Their Behavior in the Canina-Type Meiosis

Radka Vozarova et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the rose genus has two distinct 5S rDNA families, namely 5S_A and 5S_B, found in species of two subgenera with different ratios in different sections. The 5S_B family is often co-localized with 35S rDNA, while the co-localization of the 5S_A family is less common. Allo-pentaploid dogroses exhibit a unique distribution of 5S rDNA families between bivalent- and univalent-forming chromosomes.

Genome Size, Cytotype Diversity and Reproductive Mode Variation of Cotoneaster integerrimus (Rosaceae) from the Balkans

Faruk Bogunic et al.

Summary: The study revealed that apomictic tetraploid cytotype is the most common in Balkan populations, followed by sexual diploids and extremely rare triploids. The prevalence of tetraploids affects the population structure composed of clonal genotypes, and the co-occurrence of diploids and tetraploids results in higher cytotype, reproductive mode, and genotypic diversity. However, mixed-ploidy sites are extremely rare.
