Pressure-induced crystallization and densification of amorphized calcium carbonate hexahydrate controlled by interfacial water

Qihang Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of water in the crystallization of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC). It synthesizes a new type of ACC with high specific surface area and nanopores and compares it with typical spherical ACC nanoparticles. The results show that the crystallization pathways of ACC are determined by the interfacial water released from the ACC bulk, rather than the total amount of water. The study also demonstrates the control of crystallization pathways by tuning the release of water during heating and the formation of densely packed vaterite via pressured-induced transformation.

The nano- and meso-scale structure of amorphous calcium carbonate

Simon M. Clark et al.

Summary: Understanding the processes of biomineralization is important for various disciplines, such as quantifying the effects of climate change on marine organisms and advancing biomimetic materials. This study focuses on determining the structure of intermediate amorphous phases, specifically amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC), using simulations and experimental data. The researchers found that ACC consists of ordered nano-domains and a matrix of water molecules, resulting in a gel-like structure. These findings provide a new atomic-scale understanding of ACC and contribute to the general exploration of biomineralization and biomimetic processes.

Toward Carbon-Neutral Concrete through Biochar-Cement-Calcium Carbonate Composites: A Critical Review

Dahl Winters et al.

Summary: This paper explores the potential of using biochar, calcium carbonate, and cement as carbon storage materials to create carbon-neutral concrete. The system can store atmospherically absorbed CO2, reducing carbon in the atmosphere, and also helps reduce cement usage and CO2 emissions. Additionally, this composite material can be used in building structures, providing positive environmental and social impact.

Structural analyses of amorphous calcium carbonate before and after removing strontium ions from an aqueous solution

Yuta Shuseki et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) can transform into crystalline calcium carbonate, revealing the process of Sr extraction from aqueous solution. The crystallization of ACC leads to the formation of calcite, while the local environment of Sr in ACC is similar to that in crystalline calcium carbonate aragonite.

Deep carbon cycle constrained by carbonate solubility

Stefan Farsang et al.

Summary: Earth's deep carbon cycle, affecting atmospheric CO2, climate, and habitability, sees aqueous fluids released from the subducting slab mobilizing up to 92% of slab carbon, with a recycling efficiency estimated at around 40%. Solubility of carbonate minerals decreases as they become more Mg-rich during subduction, explaining discrepancies in estimates of carbon recycling due to regional variations in carbon and water subduction. Only around a third of the subducted carbon is thought to return to the surface, suggesting a complex and imperfect process.
