Efficacy of robotic exoskeleton for gait rehabilitation in patients with subacute stroke : a systematic review

Dario Calafiore et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of Robot-assisted gait rehabilitation (RAGT) for gait recovery in subacute stroke survivors, showing its potential role in this field, though further research comparing its effectiveness with conventional physical therapy is still needed in the neurorehabilitation field.

Efficacy of Overground Robotic Gait Training on Balance in Stroke Survivors: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Matteo Lorusso et al.

Summary: Stroke often leads to motor control deficits, which in turn affect balance function and severely limit the activities of daily living for stroke survivors. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to explore the efficacy of overground robot-assisted gait training (o-RAGT) in balance recovery for individuals with stroke and investigate its effects on activities of daily living. The results suggest that o-RAGT does not provide better balance and activities of daily living outcomes compared to conventional therapy. Further well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to investigate the efficacy of o-RAGT in balance for individuals with stroke.

An impairment-specific hip exoskeleton assistance for gait training in subjects with acquired brain injury: a feasibility study

Chiara Livolsi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and potential effects of a novel assistive device for gait rehabilitation in patients with acquired brain injury. The results showed that short-term gait training with the assistive device significantly improved walking performance and knee kinematics in the participants.

Stroke survivor perceptions of using an exoskeleton during acute gait rehabilitation

Caitlin McDonald et al.

Summary: This study explores the usability and acceptance of robotic-assisted gait training (RAGT) among stroke patients in an acute hospital setting. The findings suggest that RAGT is generally acceptable and helpful for stroke patients in the early phases, although there are some associated negative aspects. Walking in the device is rated as comfortable and natural, and those with greater disability rate assisted walking as more natural.

State of the art and challenges for the classification of studies on electromechanical and robotic devices in neurorehabilitation: a scoping review

Marialuisa Gandolfi et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the existing literature on electromechanical and robotic devices used in neurorehabilitation, taking into account the current clinical, technical, and regulatory classification systems. It was found that most literature lacks detailed information on the technical characteristics of the devices used, affecting the understanding of potential recovery mechanisms. Greater efforts are needed to improve the description of robotic devices used in neurorehabilitation in terms of technical and functional details, as well as conduct high-quality randomized controlled trials.

Summary: The study assessed the application of the T-FLEX actuation system in stroke patients. Biomechanical results showed improvements in ankle kinematics and variations in other joints. While the GDI did not show significant increases, alterations were observed in the assisted gait with the device.

Utilization of Robotic Exoskeleton for Overground Walking in Acute and Chronic Stroke

Karen J. Nolan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that overground walking with a robotic exoskeleton significantly increased walking speed, improved the Functional Ambulation Category (FAC) and reduced gait deviations for individuals with acute and chronic stroke. Additionally, spatial symmetry and step length also improved after utilizing the exoskeleton for overground walking.
