SU(4) Symmetry in Twisted Bilayer Graphene: An Itinerant Perspective

Dmitry Chichinadze et al.

Summary: The study investigates symmetry-broken phases in twisted bilayer graphene at small filling above charge neutrality and at van Hove filling. It reveals that the Landau functionals for particle-hole order parameters at these fillings have an approximate SU(4) symmetry but differ in the sign of quartic terms. Different filling conditions lead to different order parameter manifolds and excitations.

Supercurrent diode effect and finite-momentum superconductors

Noah F. Q. Yuan et al.

Summary: When both inversion and time-reversal symmetries are broken, the critical current of a superconductor can be nonreciprocal. In this work, it is shown that in certain classes of two-dimensional superconductors with antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling, Cooper pairs acquire a finite momentum upon the application of an in-plane magnetic field, resulting in unequal critical currents in the direction parallel and antiparallel to the Cooper pair momentum. This supercurrent diode effect is also observed in the polarity dependence of in-plane critical fields induced by a supercurrent. These nonreciprocal effects can be found in polar SrTiO3 film, few-layer MoTe2 in the Td phase, and twisted bilayer graphene where the valley degree of freedom plays a role analogous to spin.

Unconventional self-similar Hofstadter superconductivity from repulsive interactions

Daniel Shaffer et al.

Summary: In this work, we demonstrate through a renormalization group analysis that the combination of repulsive interactions and a tunable manifold of Van Hove singularities provides a new mechanism for driving unconventional superconductivity in Hofstadter bands. Our findings establish Hofstadter quantum materials like moire heterostructures as promising platforms for realizing novel reentrant Hofstadter superconductors.

Universal Josephson diode effect

Margarita Davydova et al.

Summary: We propose a universal mechanism for the Josephson diode effect in short Josephson junctions, which arises from finite Cooper pair momentum and simultaneous breaking of inversion and time-reversal symmetries. The diode efficiency is up to 40% with an asymmetry between the critical currents in opposite directions of approximately 230%. The mechanism is explained by the Doppler shift of the Andreev bound state energies and the phase-independent asymmetric current from the continuum. We also introduce a simple scheme for achieving finite-momentum pairing without relying on spin-orbit coupling, expanding the platforms for observing supercurrent diode effects.

Correlated metals and unconventional superconductivity in rhombohedral trilayer graphene: A renormalization group analysis

Da-Chuan Lu et al.

Summary: Motivated by recent experimental observations, this study investigates the electronic ordering instabilities in hole-doped rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG). The Fermi surface near Van Hove singularities (VHSs) is resolved using a fermionic hot-spot model, showing possibilities of metallic or superconducting phases. The dominant pairing channel depends on the Fermi surface nesting and Coulomb interaction.

Higher-order Van Hove singularity in magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene

Daniele Guerci et al.

Summary: Twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) has recently been discovered as a fascinating platform to study correlated and exotic superconducting phases. It hosts a zero-energy higher-order Van Hove singularity that is stronger than predicted in twisted bilayer graphene, and this singularity can be tuned with only the twist angle and a perpendicular electric field. The emergence of this singularity is a result of the merging of Van Hove singularities and Dirac cones at zero energy, going beyond the recent classifications of Van Hove singularities in single-band models. This unique structure provides an unprecedented platform for studying correlation and superconductivity.

Moire and beyond in transition metal dichalcogenide twisted bilayers

Kha Tran et al.

Summary: Fabricating van der Waals bilayer heterostructures provides a unique physical system with rich electronic and optical properties by stacking two-dimensional layers. The twist-angle between component layers is a key parameter that can control the period of lateral confinement and the nature of excitons, leading to the creation of exotic physical states. This review article focuses on the opto-electronic properties of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductor twisted bilayer heterostructures, providing insights into moire excitons and nanoscale mapping of moire superlattice.

Chern insulators, van Hove singularities and topological flat bands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Shuang Wu et al.

Summary: In magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, doping-induced Lifshitz transitions and van Hove singularities lead to the emergence of correlation-induced gaps and topologically non-trivial subbands. With the presence of a magnetic field, quantized Hall plateaus reveal the subband topology and signal the emergence of Chern insulators with Chern numbers. Additionally, a van Hove singularity at a filling of 3.5 suggests the possibility of a fractional Chern insulator, accompanied by a crossover from low-temperature metallic to high-temperature insulating behavior.

Γ valley transition metal dichalcogenide moire bands

Mattia Angeli et al.

Summary: In this paper, a continuum theory of moire minibands in the valence bands of Gamma-valley homobilayers is developed, with benchmarking against large-scale ab initio electronic structure calculations. Due to the emergent D-6 symmetry, low-energy Gamma-valley moire holes are found to differ qualitatively from their K-valley counterparts, with the first three bands realizing different models.

Excitonic density wave and spin-valley superfluid in bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide

Zhen Bi et al.

Summary: Artificial moire superlattices in 2d van der Waals heterostructures provide a new avenue for realizing and controlling correlated electronic phenomena. A correlated insulator has recently been observed in twisted bilayer WSe2, believed to be an excitonic density wave due to intervalley electron-hole pairing. The insulating gap shows remarkable sensitivity to vertical electric fields, while being weakly affected by perpendicular magnetic fields, with potential detection through optical spin injection.

Flat band properties of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homo- and heterobilayers of MoS2, MoSe2, WS2 and WSe2

V. Vitale et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the electronic structure of twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homo- and heterobilayers, exploring the flat band properties and revealing the correlation between chemical composition, twist angle, and electronic band structure. Classical force fields were used to determine the relaxed atomic structure of the twisted bilayers, while a tight-binding model parameterized from first-principles density-functional theory was employed to calculate the electronic band structure. The highest valence bands in these systems were found to originate from either Gamma-point or K/K'.

Spin-valley locked instabilities in moire transition metal dichalcogenides with conventional and higher-order Van Hove singularities

Yi-Ting Hsu et al.

Summary: Recent experiments have observed correlated insulating and possible superconducting phases in twisted homobilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Perturbative renormalization group (RG) analysis reveals that spin-valley locking significantly affects the instabilities in homobilayer TMDs, leading to physics fundamentally different from graphene-based moire systems. The results demonstrate that moire TMDs are suitable platforms to realize various interaction-induced spin-valley locked phases.
