Topological dislocation modes in three-dimensional acoustic topological insulators

Liping Ye et al.

Summary: Dislocations in solid-state materials have a significant impact on wave propagation due to their topological properties. However, the experimental evidence supporting this observation has been lacking. In this study, the researchers used a 3D acoustic weak topological insulator with controllable dislocations to provide direct experimental evidence for the existence of one-dimensional topological dislocation modes.

Observation of Degenerate Zero-Energy Topological States at Disclinations in an Acoustic Lattice

Yuanchen Deng et al.

Summary: In this study, a paradigm is devised and experimentally validated in acoustic lattices, which allows topological states to bind to disclinations without a fractional density of states but with preserved chiral symmetry. This study provides new insights into the interplay between symmetry protection in topological phases and topological defects, with potential applications in classical and quantum systems alike.

Bound states at partial dislocation defects in multipole higher-order topological insulators

Sasha S. Yamada et al.

Summary: The bulk-boundary correspondence is a characteristic of topological insulators, but it is not always necessary for boundary states to exist in the insulating gap of crystalline topological materials. Recently, partial dislocations have been proposed as exotic defects that can trap gapless topological modes in certain materials. This study presents experimental observations of partial-dislocation-induced topological modes in 2D and 3D insulators.

Topological zero-dimensional defect and flux states in three-dimensional insulators

Frank Schindler et al.

Summary: This research shows that corner defects in insulating crystals can bind 0D higher-order end states with anomalous charge and spin. These states are intrinsic consequences of the bulk electronic structure and new bulk topological invariants are introduced to predict these defect states in solid-state materials.

Bulk-boundary-defect correspondence at disclinations in rotation-symmetric topological insulators and superconductors

Max Geier et al.

Summary: This study investigates the connection between ground-state topology and lattice topology through the presence of anomalous states at disclinations. The existence of anomalous disclination states in second-order topological phases is demonstrated using Volterra processes, while all contributions to (d - 2)-dimensional anomalous disclination states are identified from weak and first-order topological phases. The correspondence between bulk topology, boundary signatures, and disclination anomaly in different symmetry classes of topological insulators and superconductors in two and three dimensions is examined to determine uniqueness.

Valley-dependent corner states in honeycomb photonic crystals without inversion symmetry

Huyen Thanh Phan et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the topological states of honeycomb photonic crystals without inversion symmetry using plane wave expansion and finite element methods. Our findings show that topological corner states appear at 60 degree corners, but are absent at other corners, suggesting a sign flip of valley Chern number at the corner. This research provides an experimentally feasible platform for exploring valley-dependent higher-order topology in photonic systems.

Dislocation as a bulk probe of higher-order topological insulators

Bitan Roy et al.

Summary: Topological materials play a central role in modern condensed matter physics due to their robust metallic edge or surface states protected by topological invariants. Higher-order topological states can have localized modes at lower-dimensional boundaries, and the presence of dislocations in crystalline materials can probe higher-order topology.
