Composites consisting of calcium phosphate cements and mesoporous bioactive glasses as a 3D plottable drug delivery system

Richard Frank Richter et al.

Summary: This study investigates the composite materials of calcium phosphate cements (CPC)-mesoporous bioactive glasses (MBG) and demonstrates that the degradation of the final scaffolds can be influenced by varying the MBG content. Additionally, therapeutic ions can be incorporated into the cement phase or the MBG to vary the released ion concentration. The high specific surface area of MBG allows for the functionalization of proteins without impairing the extrudability of the CPC-MBG composites. Moreover, the released proteins from these composites maintain their biological activity, making the CPC-MBG system a promising candidate for bone tissue engineering.

The Effect of Liquid Phase Concentration on the Setting Time and Compressive Strength of Hydroxyapatite/Bioglass Composite Cement

Shamsi Ebrahimi et al.

Summary: Composite scaffolds of hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanoparticles and bioactive glass (BG) have been used in bone tissue engineering. The addition of bioglass to the HAp structure was found to increase compressive strength and bioactivity, while reducing density and increasing porosity. SEM results showed that greater nucleation and growth of the apatite layer were observed with 30 wt.% BG, resulting in higher bioactivity.

Summary: In this study, PMMA-MBG composite scaffolds containing different amounts of ceria were successfully prepared and characterized. The presence of cerium ions in the composite scaffolds was confirmed through various analyses. The in-vitro biocompatibility evaluation demonstrated that the composite scaffold with 1 mol% ceria had higher cell viability compared to the control group after 96 hours of incubation.
