Homogeneity Measurements of Li-Ion Battery Cathodes Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Moritz Kappeler et al.

Summary: This study investigates the capability of nanosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (ns-LIBS) for depth-resolved concentration measurements of Li-Ion battery cathodes. The authors aim to detect manufacturing faults and irregularities at an early stage in the production process. Compared to femtosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (fs-LIBS), ns-LIBS is more attractive for inline application in industrial settings due to its smaller plasma size, moderate intensity, non-thermal energy distribution, and lower investment costs.

Calibration-Free Quantitative Analysis of Lithium-Ion Battery (LiB) Electrode Materials Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS)

Ravi Pamu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of calibration-free LIBS for rapid and reliable quantitative spectrochemical characterizations of layered Li metal oxide cathodes containing Mo and Cr dopants. The results show that the elemental compositions estimated by LIBS are in good agreement with nominal stoichiometric values. These ex situ LIBS characterizations pave the way for future high-efficiency application of calibration-free quantitative LIBS for rapid in situ analyses of elemental composition changes in battery electrode materials under operation.
