Anisotropy of soil water diffusivity of hillslope soil under spruce forest derived by X-ray CT and lab experiments

Steffen Beck-Broichsitter et al.

Summary: This study investigates the directional differences in hydraulic conductivity and soil water diffusivity by extending anisotropy factors. The research found that anisotropy increases with the volume fraction of macropores, and the X-ray CT-based anisotropy ratio is larger for horizontal sampling than for vertical sampling. This indicates the existence of a predominantly horizontally oriented pore network and the initiation of lateral preferential flow. The study suggests that combining hydraulic conductivity and diffusivity can reveal the role of soil hydraulic characteristics in small-scale lateral preferential flow generation.

Evolution of Temperature Field around Underground Power Cable for Static and Cyclic Heating

Shahbaz Ahmad et al.

Summary: The shift from overhead high voltage cables to underground power cable systems has been driven by frequent failures under severe weather conditions and electromagnetic pollution. An experimental study was conducted to investigate the heat and mass transfer mechanisms around an underground power cable, showing thermal charging of dry sand and natural convection in wet sand. The results also indicate a positive nonlinear relationship between thermal conductivity and density, moisture, and temperature.

Hydraulic conductivity of gravelly soils with various coarse particle contents subjected to freeze-thaw cycles

Yang Lu et al.

Summary: The hydraulic conductivity of gravelly soils is significantly influenced by factors such as gravel content, confining stress, number of F-T cycles, and initial water content. The presence of gravel particles alters the soil structure, leading to a significant increase in water conductivity.
