Electrically controlled self-similar evolution of viscous fingering patterns

Pedro H. A. Anjos et al.

Summary: A controlling protocol for traditional viscous fingering instability has been designed using an electro-osmotic flow generated by an external electric field, which can control the number of fingers on the interface and delay or promote the self-similar regime by several orders of magnitude, or even suppress it. Self-similar shapes ranging from almost circular to fully developed fingered structures can be produced without altering the material properties of the fluids and cell geometry.

Influence of interfacial rheology on viscous fingering

Jiayu Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the stabilizing effect of surface rheology on interfacial instabilities, but the impact of surface rheological stresses on the Saffman-Taylor instability remains unknown. The presence of typical surface viscous surfactants is predicted to result in quantitative changes in the system.

Shape instabilities in confined ferrofluids under crossed magnetic fields

Rafael M. Oliveira et al.

Summary: The morphology and dynamic behavior of the interface between a ferrofluid and a nonmagnetic fluid in a Hele-Shaw cell are analyzed under crossed radial and azimuthal magnetic fields. Numerical simulations and perturbative mode-coupling theory are used to study the different dynamic regimes of the pattern-forming process, considering factors such as viscosity difference, magnetic susceptibility, surface tension, and relative strength of applied magnetic fields. The role of initial random perturbations in determining the shape and stability of spinning ferrofluid patterns is also investigated.

Viscous normal stresses and fingertip tripling in radial Hele-Shaw flows

Irio M. Coutinho et al.

Summary: In this study, viscous fingering phenomena in radial Hele-Shaw cells were analyzed, focusing on the occurrence of fingertip splitting and fingertip tripling. A third-order perturbative modecoupling scheme was employed to detect the onset of tip-tripling instabilities, with consideration of viscous normal stresses at the fluid-fluid interface. The results showed that accounting for such stresses allows the capture of tip-tripling events at weakly nonlinear stages of the flow, and sensitivity to changes in capillary number and viscosity contrast was also examined.
