Predicting ammonia nitrogen in surface water by a new attention-based deep learning hybrid model

Yuting Li et al.

Summary: This study proposed a new hybrid model based on LSTM neural network, combining the dual-stage attention mechanism and boundary corrected maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform data decomposition method. Compared with other models, the hybrid model showed higher prediction accuracy and provided early warning for NH3-N pollution.

Effects of land cover, topography, and soil on stream water quality at multiple spatial and seasonal scales in a German lowland catchment

Chaogui Lei et al.

Summary: The influence of catchment characteristics on water quality varies with space and time, with soil properties, land use composition, and configuration being key factors. Spatial variation of water quality is better explained at larger scales and in summer, with different important variables at different scales and for different water quality variables.

Effect of typhoon rainstorm patterns on the spatio-temporal distribution of non-point source pollution in a coastal urbanized watershed

Xiaoran Fu et al.

Summary: Extreme climate conditions, such as typhoon rainfall events, have significant impacts on non-point source pollution in urban areas. Early pattern rainstorm events may lead to more severe pollution, while urbanized land-use greatly affects pollution load intensity. The research findings provide valuable insights for designing effective strategies to mitigate rainfall-runoff pollution in coastal urban watersheds in China.

Influence of landscape structures on river water quality at multiple spatial scales: A case study of the Yuan river watershed, China

Qiyu Xu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of landscape structures on river water quality at different spatial scales, finding that the impact varied depending on the distance from the river. Joint effects between landscape composition and landscape configuration were found to contribute significantly to explaining water quality variation. The regional division method used also had a considerable impact on the measured correlation between landscape structures and water quality, with larger basin area divisions enhancing the correlation.

Scale relationship between landscape pattern and water quality in different pollution source areas: A case study of the Fuxian Lake watershed, China

Shuangyun Peng et al.

Summary: This study focused on the scale relationship between landscape pattern and water quality in different pollution source areas within the Fuxian Lake basin. The research found that different landscape metrics have varying effects on water quality, with Shannon's diversity index (SDI) being a key factor across the entire watershed. The strongest impact of landscape pattern on water quality changes was observed in urban and phosphorus mining regions at sub-watershed scales, while in farmland and village regions, 300 m and 500 m were identified as the areas where landscape pattern had the strongest effect on water quality.

Contribution rates analysis for sources apportionment to special river sections in Yangtze River Basin

Hui Bai et al.

Summary: The study developed a water pollution sources apportionment and contribution rates analysis method based on a one-dimensional model, finding that urban living point sources contributed most to COD and NH4+-N pollution, while agricultural sources were the main pollution source of TP. Contribution rates change along with precipitation variability in different seasons and water periods, encouraging the tracing of environmental responsibility subjects.

Simulating nonpoint source pollutant loading in a karst basin: A SWAT modeling application

Sean J. Zeiger et al.

Summary: This study employed SWAT to simulate the impacts of natural and human factors on streamflow, sediment, and nutrient loading in a karst catchment. Model calibration and validation results highlighted potential critical source areas of NPS pollutant loading. The study also emphasized the need for improved sub-surface storage and flow routing SWAT modeling routines in creating physically realistic models of karst watershed hydrology.
